jesus christ... does it matter ? he asked a sensible question that's hardly a sensible response is it ?
with regards to the actual reason for this thread, i know the gti head is something like 30kg heavier than a 8v head, but that's through the grapevine, someone might be able to clarify that... dont think the bottom end will be that much different tho, unless you're going from an ally block to a steel one or vice versa.

iirc, I remember a figure of 35kg floating around for the weight difference between the 1.3 rallye engine and the 16V engine so that'd probably be a good starting point.

I would like you to consider this. I've just weighed the TU 1360 alloy bottom end, it's approx 55kg fully built. Compare this to 78kg for the TU 1.6 16v bottom end.
Now consider the TU 16v head is approx 7kg heavier than the 8v one, and the exhaust manifold adds a few kg's too.
So basically if you go from a TU alloy block 8v to the 16v, you add in excess of 30kg to the outer end of the car!

Because all that extra weight at the front can fuck with the handling and balance of the car, that's why.

Haha! Never mind. I threw my handling completely out of the window. Then again, that might be because of leaking dampers as well. Oops...
