i'm considering selling my car but want to know your views. as most of you know i have a 106 gti. has a BMC enclosed, scorpion exhaust (with cat), stripped out and 1.1 gearbox. it can do a 14.89 1/4 mile as is, and i am plannig on manifold, de-cat, cams & re-map in feb. seems like agood engine so im wondering what would be quicker. my car in that spec or a stripped mi16? which would be quicker 1/4 mile etc? seeing as what it can do in current spec.

my mate had a 175bhp mi16 and it was so much fun and sounded sick. did a 14.4 1/4 mile

i wouldnt personally sell a gti for a 205 mi16 as regardless to what anyone says 205's break.......ALOT

performance wise they would be pretty equal with an mi getting low 14's from what i have seen and a tuned mi16 getting low 13's

If you actually want to spend more time on the road/track than on the hard shoulder then keep the 106. The 205 is a great car, I have no doubts about that, been in plenty and really like them, but they're getting on a little. And the way you treat your cars Nick, you'd be better suited to the 106 ;)

see that's what im thinking. my mates was really unreliable. now i have a refined(ish) car i miss the rawness of my rallye which an mi16 would be. but i know if i got something loud and raw again i'd miss the refined feel.

we built a 205mi16 when i was 18 and my business partner was 19, that did about 5k on the limit all the time and that never broke down once, it all depends on how its built and what parts are used, if its built badly then it will brake down.

have you actually ever seen a 205 mi16 run low 13's? i find it very doubtful

You will be surprised...the 16V motor can be fettled and give gains a lo easier than the 8V from what i 've seen.

Seen one on carbs run a mid 13. Gains arent that easy but there are some crazily modded ones about. On the subject of which to have the 106 would be the one for me. The 205 is amazing but everyday use would get in the way. If you have another car (a swift perhapes Petros;))then the 205 would be ideal

actually yes......2 of local notts 205 are capable of running low 13's all day long at pod and i have witnessed them doing it

infact i have a video somewhere of one of them against a skyline up pod doing a 13.2 and the skyline doing a 13.8

why dont u buy a 205 and put a 106 gti engine in. Then do the mods you have planned for your current 106, that should run 13s....

Dangerous Dave

It won't, it'll run 13s but I'd be shocked if it dipped into the 13s with that setup

my mates 205 is running 14.8's with the 106 gti engine in box. Is there much difference with the 1.1 box to the gti???

5er says those times are at York ;)

Not much difference in the gearboxs, 106 ph1 rallye box is the one to have for 1/4 miles

Mi16 anyday ;)

100% agree - if you want performance only the Mi16 will win hand down - standard from 160 BHp 1.9 litre - need I say any more.

Only if your not bothered about reliability etc.. etc

Indeed...A swift make a nice day to day car and drifts on all foursvery happy

When the weather is ok or on a track, the 205 comes out to play...Never been on the side of the road with the bonnet up though...(knocks on wood)
It has ferried me from cadwell and back, on a few short stints and a couple of long ones with no problems. My hearing is affected but that tends to go within a week:D

say you spend 5 grand on a 106 engine get 180bhp and put it in a 205. 205 rallye cant be any lighter than an s1 rallye and i know im not gonna run 13's so cant see how it would in a 205!

i'd rather have an original Mi16 tongue out

Petros K
21-12-2005, 07:59 PM
Mick, if you spend 5 grand on the said engine you need to spend at least another 10 on suspension, gearbox, etc etc....

Now, with 15K, I can think of quite a few MI16s running 220+ brake...Thats 40+ ponies more with a car that weighs about the same. Never mind a cheap T16 which costs about that etc etc...

Of course, the 106 is in my view alot better in handling and setup, but the fun you can have on a 205 cant be measured...

my gti box did 66mph on the limiter in 2nd, with the 1.1 box it does about 61mph. in 3rd the gti box did about 92mph on the limiter with the 1.1 it does about 83mph so theres quite a big difference yeah. it flies through the gears.

I binned my MI16 in favour of a 106 GTi. I originally had a s1 Rallye and always missed the way it drove - much nicer to drive and more nimble than the 205.

Mine is now s/c with 200 bhp atw so I get the best of both worlds very happy

why would i need to spend 10k on gear box etc with 180bhp? its running rallye box had no problems in 6k miles admitedly no track work yet but then im not planning on becoming a track addict probably just a handful of track days next year. as for brakes 4 pots up front rear disks with brake bias say 1500 then i just got a bilstein fastroad setup thats doing me fine its not gonna be used just as a track car as much as id like to.

anyway i wasnt saying anything about mi16's i was saying that a 205 with a modified 106 engine will not run 13's. i know an mi16 engine is faster than a 106 engine ('d cars) 1.9 vs 1.6 no contest. im saying i dont think its as easy as your making out to make a 205 run 13's
