We got 389 miles (40+ mpg) from my wife's S1 16v on a run with lots of 3rd/4th gear overtaking. :D

It has breathing mods and makes 149bhp.

The best of both worlds.

S1 8v and I'm going for the most at the moment, from a ~33 fillup of 95 Ron fuel I'll get about 300 miles.

I saw no improvement in anything when using the more expensive stuff for about a month.

I'm on the red and trying to get it over the 300 before the light comes on. (Been driving at 50mph everywhere ;)) Except on the lower limit roads of course :)

Damn! pretty much standard? I'll get 100 miles to a tank better than you and I only have a K&N airfilter on mine :o

Could that be a problem with your car ?

S1, see my sig. for the spec.

Full tank of V-Power cost me 33, Im on 263.7 miles and still just above 1/4 of a tank left.

Mainly morning and afternoon to/from work driving and two trips to N.Wales plus random shopping trips.

Im happy with that. :p

Full spec is on my website, 16v S2 with breathing mods. 400-420 miles to a tank of V-Power on a long haul. When I drive it hard i'll get 200 miles to 20 quids worth of V-Power.

standard s1 rallye

well i never put anymore than a tenner in mine! i get 100 miles if i drive like a grandad, but thats runnin until the point that the fuel light doesnt go off when you brake hard (so u know its gonna run out in about 5 miles ;) ) usually i average 80 miles with accelerating hard frequently

not bad tbh, it never realy gets a full tank as thats nearly half of my wages  but its quite economical for uni

tho i do use ALOT of engine braking....does that effect it alot?

I think my car is fine ish, its just sat in traffic for 3 miles from cold, then I get to work, turn it off and do the same home. I do have a pugsport but I don;t think that is a big deal. Before I changed the engine I had a few dodgy sensors and got about 140 miles to a tank :guiness:
It did backfire massively on every gearchage and chuck flames out, and to be honest it was almost worth the extra 50 a month on juice!

I did just under 280 miles on one tank on the day I went to Cadwell, 150 miles there and back, 80 on the track and the rest running about the next day.

If you are doing decent runs out then 210 miles is pretty poo, engine braking shoudlnt make a massive effect as with the throttle closes barely any petrol is being used.

Today I drove to Sussex and back. 25 to 200 miles.

On Sunday I drove to Guildford and back via a few stops. 30 to 250miles.

Petrol cost around 90pence, and I've worked out my MPG to be around 33-34, which I don't consider that good as I was generally driving sensibly and economically.

Mine's pretty consistent at around the 80 miles to a tenner mark, which means I can judge exactly how much fuel I need to put in for a journey. It's been the same in both my Gtis and my Rallye.

I try and guage this as accurately as possible; i.e. run it on the red for a while before filling up, and resetting the miles at the petrol station.

Those who are casually getting 100 miles to a tenner is unlikely, to be honest :)

Anyway... I find that thrashing it a bit doesn't knock off too much economy, so no need to drive like a boring person.

Darren, it's not unlikely, because I do it :) I feel a petrol diary coming on :)

Darren, it's not unlikely, because I do it :) I feel a petrol diary coming on :)

Me too.

I think the most I've done before my light has came on was 320 miles from a ~35 fill up, but that was a one off, its now around 290 - 310 the light will come on. :)

a steady drive with motor way/dual cabbage way the other day and i used what i thought was a tank but my guage is a lil bit out. i did 240 miles to 36 litres which is about 30 mpg i think. giving it some on a long run we sometimes do i've gone thru 36 litres in 180 miles. that works out about 24 mpg i think. never had 300 to a tank out of it no matter how steady i drive. i've had it down to 16 mpg too when really giving it some on the back roads, below 60 of course

infamous aidy
07-03-2007, 05:51 AM
can someone confirm it is a 40 litre tank please

I always thought it was a 45 litre tank? If not i've been running it pretty dry in the past!

I struggle to get over 30mpg. Only time recently I have managed it was cruising on the motorways to and from Crail a couple of weeks ago. Typical for me is about 24mpg but I rag it everywhere

darrenwm

Some people are just proving how inaccurate this thread is when they "fill up their tank with 30".

The only real way is to fill up the tank, and make a note of how many litres you get in, and then do the same when you next fill up to calcualte how many litres exactly were used.

That's too geeky for me though, so I just put in 20 a time and expect 150miles around town, or 180miles on a long trip.

the last tank i used got me 36.9mpg, and just over 300 miles, that was with a trip to and around london, from the southcoast, and poodling around the b roads where i live in traffic half the time. the best run ive had out of a full tank was 40.5mpg, that was a trip from where i live (selsey, nr chichester) to tiverton along the a303, then back along the motorway. i forget the miles i did now?

My car is a standard s1 8v with k 'n' n replacement filter, and ptfe gasket.

I've had over 50mpg out of mine - and thats working it out properly on a mixed day of spirited driving around Wales.
I run an 1.1 box though.

Seems to go forever, I reckon I've averaged over 45mpg since I've had it :)
Only gets used for proper drives though, no short trips commuting etc. That makes a huge difference to fuel economy!

I dunno what my MPG is, will work it out next tmie I fill up and go thru a tank.

All I can say is, I've just nudged 290 miles and it's hovering around a 1/4 mark. But, weekend is coming along with what I like to call ''enthusiastic driving'', so it's bound to go tits up by Saturday afternoon.

What effect, if any does engine braking have on MPG? And the use of headlights?

Chris C

between 280 and 300 miles a tank usally, my 16v is actually better on fuel than my 1.7 ford puma:confused:

a quick googly woogly tells me its 45 litre capacity, nice i can get all round our kendal loop without having to limp back into leeds for the last 40 miles lol

Tom J

It has to be a 45 litre tank - I put 43.5 or something into Laura's on the way back from Exmoor the other week and the light still hadn't come on!!

My method of testing is to fill the tank to the top, reset the trip and drive until it's well into the red. Then I fill back up to the top and note the amount of fuel required. If you pay by card it doesn't matter about getting the price of the fuel to a round sum!

I've had 400 miles from full to the light coming on, but only with sustained motorway running on super unleaded. Normally I get about 320/330, on 95 RON I was only getting about 290 on average.

That 450 miles I did was down to FCS 2006, after I left Edinburgh, I filled up with a warm engine and set off down the A1 at about 3250-3500rpm, so say about 55-60mph, and kept that going for about 6 hours, lol.

Also when I went down and picked up my seats and gearbox from Spence in Manchester, i got from Edinburgh to Manchester on half a tank, 200 miles to half a tank, but had to make a detour to Leeds, otherwise I would have made it from Edinburgh - Manchester - Edinburgh, 400 mile in one tank :D

loving the fact that my 1600cc 16v is only a bit worse on fuel than a 1300cc 8:yikes: v
