Well my Caterham kit got delivered on thursday, and its a good job my old man has a good size garage! It started off quite tidy but there is that much stuff in the kit (as you can proably imagine) there are now bits and pieces scattered all over the floor.

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr284/martyadd/Image023.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr284/martyadd/Image024.jpg

So we made a sart on it on friday night after work. It was slow going at first untill we got used to finding the right faster pack, then finding the right bits in the pack and ofcourse following Caterhams instructions.

First went on the steering rack, and then we put the front suspension together.

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr284/martyadd/Image028.jpg

Everything on now apart from the hub and brakes, and that goes on in one piece. Its a good job it didnt come with any paint on because by the time we had finished attaching the shocker there would have been a lot missing!

Brilliant, I've been waiting for this!
I assume your dad is already in the Accademy?
I have the Men&Motors DVD here if you want me to lend it to you??? (It is a Wessie though!)

My dad did the Academy in 2003 and has raced them ever since, you can just see his superlight in the background of some of the pics.

So that was pretty much friday night, the front suspension done

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr284/martyadd/Image032.jpg

Then it was off down south for the Caterham dinner dance on saturday night. Stopped us getting much further, just managed to get a couple of hours in on Sunday night.

All we managed to do it that time was to fit the diff. It doesnt sound like a lot but let me tell you, that diff is an absolute twat to fit. All ill say is that its a good job we had a porter power!

Nice project:) And what a garage!
How much do you save by buying the self build kit?
What is the engine?

martyadd
12-11-2008, 07:03 PM
I know, having a decent garage to work in makes a big difference, there is still a flat floor kit to get setup in there aswell!

I think the saving is around the £2K mark, i'd much rather do it myself though, its part of the fun i think, plus it makes it a lot easyer when you have to do some repairs.

The engine is a 1.6 Ford Sigma, replaces the 1600 K series, new for this year i think

So i was back to it this weekend, managed to get a decent day at it today although i was without the help of my old man. Luckily i have a very good girlfriend who said she would step in and help out.

The first thing to do was build up the de dion tube on the bench (even though you would have to take it to bits again to get it though the chasis and into place)

First go on the ears

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr284/martyadd/Image015.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr284/martyadd/Image014.jpg

Then you build the calipers and bearings onto the ears, now with the brakes in place you can attach the brake lines and rivet them to the de dion.

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr284/martyadd/Image017.jpg

When all built up you can the take the ears off and thread the de dion through the chasis. You then follow the instructions and go to build up the rear suspension only to be told in typical Caterham style you have to leave it fit the rollcage first. So then that went on.

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr284/martyadd/Image019.jpg

So after all that we could then fit the suspension.

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr284/martyadd/Image022-1.jpg

And thats pretty much it for today, another 6 hours and about 18-20 hours in total.

Shame i cant swop engines with my dad

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr284/martyadd/Image023-1.jpg

And dont forget peeps my Rallye is still for sale in the section on the forum, cheers

Hello Marty

Like the blog. It looks brilliant fun building the car yourself and like you say when something goes you will be clued-up on what to do about it. Will look out for you at Aintree next year.

Love those wheels on the Rallye, Caterham looks good too :D

martyadd

The wheels are actually from a Caterham, i got 4 fronts on loan from dads collection of bits. Suprisingly they are the same pcd, just the wrong offset so require spacers.

Rich - Doesnt look like we are going to Aintree this year, not even sure if we are making a visit to Harewood either. Just got the provisional callender through now.

Do you think it will be finished me for May 2nd???

martyadd
18-11-2008, 07:52 AM
Ha, yea deffo, ive got a lot of testing to get in before then. Goodwood, Oulton, and Mallory are all new circuits for me so will require a visit before the season starts.

I think it will proably be built in another couple of weeks, my dad thinks the engine will be ready to go in this week. Then as long as it goes through the SVA ok, jobs a good en!

martyadd
25-11-2008, 07:57 PM
The car has really started to take shape now, after some minor problems. First the gearbox didnt have some seals in it which we didnt realise untill we started to fill it with oil. And second we only have the passenger side drive shaft.

But other than that my dad made some good progress during the week and got the engine dropped in and the passenger side hub finished

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr284/martyadd/Image025-1.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr284/martyadd/Image026-1.jpg

So when i got up there on Saturday i got started on the exhaust or jigsaw as it should be called

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr284/martyadd/Image027-1.jpg

Not as easy as you would think to get them all through that hole and lined up on the block

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr284/martyadd/Image029-1.jpg

and the finished article

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr284/martyadd/Image030-1.jpg

Sunday saw the weather take a turn for the worse and it really wasnt warm in the garage!

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr284/martyadd/Image031-1.jpg

But we soldiered on and i got the belts fitted and had to do about 100 pop rivets, which helped keep me warm

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr284/martyadd/Image032-1.jpg

Whilst i was doing that my dad just about got all the pipes and stuff sorted. It would have been quicker if he had bothered to read the instructions first though (sorry dad).

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr284/martyadd/Image034-1.jpg

Then we filled it with coolent, we new it was right this time because we didnt get coolent all over the floor! After that the oil went in and when the battery was connected it was time to see if it would turn over. We managed that ok, got oil pressure, then tried to start it and we couldnt get the dam immobiliser off! So after a lot of head scatching and instruction reading we got it sorted and got it fired up for the first time. Always a great feeling when it actually woks!

Then my seat went it and that was about it for the weekends work

Weekend off this weekend, so no progress to report. I spoke to my dad in the week and he said he was on with lights and wings, so it shouldnt be too much longer. Just the missing driveshaft thats holding us up now. I bet when it gets finished and i can actually drive it, its not going to be the weather for open top motoring!

martyadd
13-01-2009, 08:07 PM
Well ive managed to get myself a spare 10mins so thought it was about time i did an update! HAd plenty on over the xmas break with car building, family seeing, decorating, and the odd cheeky drink or 2.

So front wings and lights were already well under way when i made up to the car at the start of the holiday (thanks dad).

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr284/martyadd/Image041.jpg

At this point we were still waiting for the missing driveshaft from Caterham so lights and wings kept us busy till it arrived

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr284/martyadd/Image042.jpg

The rear wings were a bit of pain, but could have been a lot worse. The body of the car and the wings were all pre-drilled. All that need to be done was cut Vs in the rubber strip that goes between the body and the wing and drill holes through it, in the right places if it goes to plan. Then just attach with plastic nuts and botls which will break when hit in order to save the aluminum body.

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr284/martyadd/Image044.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr284/martyadd/Image045.jpg

After that the lights can go on, you just have to take car fixing these to make sure they are level.

great project !! how much has it cost up to now if you dont mind me asking ?? think one of these would be a nice step up from the rallye !!:D

martyadd
14-01-2009, 07:30 PM
Its about £18.5k + vat building yourself including your first season of motorsport all included.

Then when the drive shaft arrived it was a mad rush to get it put together and the brakes bled so i could drive it for the first time. This did end up quite scarry because the brakes were'nt up to much on the fist blast down the drive! It was agreat feeling though to get it working after all the time and effort.

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr284/martyadd/Image049.jpg

After getting it up to temp and giving it a good check over we decided to set the flat floor up.

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr284/martyadd/Image051.jpg

We had also made the decision to get both our cages painted, my dads was a bit worse for ware and needed doing really and we wanted to do mine just to be different. You might get to see what colour we went for later, and whether it was a good choice or not!

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr284/martyadd/Image052.jpg

Looks wrong without a rollcage on doesnt it.

It has been a group effort honest, my dad tends to get a bit grumpy if he's left to do stuff in the garage on his own. Yea im very lucky my dad likes his motorsport toys, and we are not finished yet!

MAY 16 PEMBREY SOUTH WALES – SPRINT
MAY 30 LYDDEN KENT – SPRINT

Time for an update! The car went through its sva without too much drama, there was a slight issue with the top speed of the car being over the speed rating for the tyres, only by 2mph but a quick call to Caterham sorted that out. So now we are just waiting till March to register it so it gets an 09 plate.

Other jobs done are heated screen swoped for non heated, side impact bar fitted, saeting possition and steering wheel possition altered. As you can see in picks we had the cage, impact bar and screen frame and mount all powder coated white. Humm i wonder which car gave me the idea for that coulour scheme. ;)

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr284/martyadd/Image014-1.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr284/martyadd/Image013.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr284/martyadd/Image020.jpg

So ive just got to wait untill sunday 22 Feb when it will be getting put through its paces at Cadwell Park, then im off to Rockingham the week after so ive got a fun couple of weeks ahead of me!

Thanks guys, now time for a quick update. So the cars been finished for a couple of weeks and ive already managed to sqeeze in a trackday at Cadwell, Rockingham, and ive got a 3rd this sunday at Mallory. But even though the car was finished there was still plenty of tinkering to be done!

First on the list were the pedals, stops needed adjusting and possitions altered to suit heel toe'ing.

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr284/martyadd/Image046-1.jpg

Second was seeing how much lead i would need on board to make the minimum weight. And the answer was . . .

This
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr284/martyadd/Image040-1.jpg

Plus
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr284/martyadd/Image041-1.jpg

Then we had to set the camber

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr284/martyadd/Image042-1.jpg

After that was the tracking, and remember to do the camber first and then the tracking!

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr284/martyadd/Image043-1.jpg

And then thats the car pretty much ready to go.

We added a nice peltor intercom aswell just to make communications a bit easyer aswell

Any updates Martyn???

martyadd
28-06-2011, 08:00 PM
Well it's been a while so i think i owe you a bit of an update!

Firstly i would highly recommend doing the Caterham Academy as a way to get into racing. Everyone is in the same boat so it easy to get along and have fun. As you would expect it had its highs and lows. For me the sprints went well, having a couple of top 3 finishes, but i didn't take as well to the racing, my best being a 5, if i remember right. Anyway it all seems like such i long time ago now!

2010 into Roadsport B went much better for me, i had more top 3 finishes and even managed to get onto the top step at Brands. It was close all season and i just managed to steal 3rd in the championship overall which i was amazing. Wining at Brands and been on the podium at Zolder being the highlights. If i can put some videos up i will, if your lucky i might even put the one on of me crashing my dads R400 at Croft.

I'm giving the Caterham stuff a miss this year and am working hard to convert the Rallye from a road going sprint car to a proper circuit racer. Not sure if its going to be competitive still been an 8 valver but I'm gonna have a go anyway.

First race in the Rallye this weekend at Knockhill in the Northern Saloons :D

Why not use the Caterham for the 'Loons'?

Anyway, PM me your mobile and I will get onto the tb issue again tomorrow.

I did a couple last year but got a bit sick of passing people in the corners only for them to just drive past me on the straight. Im hoping to find some more evenly matched cars to race with in the Rallye, if not ill have to kick the old man out of his R400!

Hello Marty, good to hear from you. Glad the Caterham Academy went well. Thanks for updating the blog - an interesting read and sounds like lots of fun. V interesting to hear you are planning on developing the rallye. I'd assumed you had sold it long ago. Having just switched to class 1A in the sprints and hillclimbs and seeing Martin Rowe's modified S1 way ahead of me I could use a car of its spec.

martyadd
04-07-2011, 07:38 PM
Alright Rich, glad to hear your still sprinting and moving into class 1A. Last time i had a look on the Midland Speed it looked short of competitors. Yea Martin's is a quick car, not unbeatable though! How far into the 1A develpment are you with the car? After racing at Knockhill at the weekend i know the 1400 in my car is not the engine to have in a 1600 class. Im just thinking things over at the mement but my engine could be up for grabs if you were interested.
