106 rallye 1.3 engine tuning options
hi all,

i have a S1 rallye with std engine and i would like to upgrade it to have more power , i am not looking for thoring loads of cash, my goal is 120 - 125 hp what kind of mod can you recommend me ?
the handling and braking is already sorted out so now i just need to address the engine.

hi Chris ,

thanks for your kind reply , i would not want to o the ITB direction as i would like to keep the original look under the hood .
do you think that with CR of 11:1 , cat cams 602 and mapping i will be able to see my goal ?
anyone have some experience with 602 cam ?

bar the exhaust, the rest will make no difference whatsoever, the injectors are almost exactly the same size, you need to get more air in before more fuel anyway.

was only a suggestion of "soft mod"

he said he did not want to make too many changes. If he change air intake, injectors and a good chip made in dyno.
he can also change the height of the head and insert a walbro 255 with a larger fuel valve.
with small modifications, head 8v stock (1.6cc block) I have 129.8 hp.

you have access to a very favourable Dyno I see.

larger fuel pumps are not required nor are higher pressure fuel regulators, standard reg and pump will supply enough for circa 280 bhp with the right injectors.

however you still need to get the air into the engine.

i've fuel pump, pressure regulator, chip, ax gti injectors, block 106 gti head 8v, compression per cylinder (+/- 14.3 / 14.8kg) metal head gasket, Alu intake, exhaust manifolds, 55mm exhaust + ractive exhaust. 129.8hp @ BaPro Dyno.
I have movies on trackdays, circuit estoril and ive similar and superior rythm to Saxo or 106 Gti with some modifications.
I change the pump because the original rallye pump suffers from lack of fuel, when on a long right corners.

That sounds like fuel starvation which you could solve with tank baffles and foam rather than a deficiency on the fuel pump.

On a serious note if the original poster just wants a power hike NOS could be a genuine option.

I have few questions regarding engine parts:

When changing cam do I need to change vernier cam pully?

What can be gained from other valves? (https://www.kamracing.co.uk/car-tuni...e-1-4-xsi.html)

What about valve springs and retainers,is it a must or just to work better and safer/longer?

yes ideally you need a vernier so you can dial the cam in accurately, they aren't always on the same keyway angle as an oem cam, plus a head skim and different belt tension can alter cam timing too.

as for valves they are typically plenty big enough in most "sporty" peugeot engines and larger valves alone will not gain much if anything at all, you'd need a few hundred quid spent on porting to suit your camshaft.

valvetrain depends on how wild you want to go with the camshaft, your cam seller or engine builder should be able to advise at what kind of lift or RPM you need to change them.

hi All,

thank you for your kind replies , after some additional thinking i came to the conclusion that i will perform the common 1.3/1.6 hybrid transplant as i will gain more for less investment , the 1.3 engine will be kept for the next buyer of the car or in case that i would like to put the car back in standard trim .

Good choice.
take advantage and put an metal head gasket, and then you have to have a good chip because the block changes the useful regime of the engine.

can some one share a set up for this combination and some ?

my set up will be :

1.3 head - not sure if i will have some porting on it or not as i don't know who can do this job in Belgium

1.6 bottom end fully rebuild ( rings , bearings ect.. )
CR 11:1
Cam : cat cams 646 or 645
S1 inlet
what type of HG should i use ?
custom mapping that all will match

what kind of power & torque figures i should expect form this set up ?

I don't think you need to change the head if you have a J2, you wont gain anything, standard oem gasket will be just fine as they are very good.

646 is a long duration rally cam, quite a bit of lift so you will need lots of rpm on a single throttle, probably more than 11-1 so a change of pistons will be required, probably springs as well.

I would recommend Talking to sandy Brown about this kind of build, he is often too busy to take on more head or engine work, SRD in Cornwall can do headwork as they know peugeot engines too.
