engine conversions
Hi
I'm looking for a nice S1 with a 1.3 litre engine still fitted. I remember reading Autocar when the cars were announced and really being taken by the idea of a screaming 1.3 nutter engine which required the driver to keep the engine on cam. 25 years later (gulp!) and I can find many more cars with 1.6 conversions than with 1.3s. I just wonder what the reason for this is? Is it because people wanted more power/ to muck about with the cars or is it simply that the larger units were more commonplace as the 1.3 engines have expired in the last 25years.. Also, if anyone can give me anythoughts on the driving experience of the 1.3 vs a 1.6 engined-conversion would be great. Am I ruling out a brilliant or even "better" car by wanting to stick to this idea of the fast revving, wring its neck approach of the 1.3? cheers Will |

I’ve had both.
1.6 16v rather than 8v is a significant step up from the 1.3. At almost 100bhp per litre the 1.3 was a cracker but really needs it neck wrung. As it was highly tuned from factory there’s not a lot of scope to develop it. Some folk did tune some other 106 engine variants to meet different 1400 competition specs, but rarely used the 1.3 as a base. The TU5J4 and TU5JP4 are the two 16v 1.6 units. The latter being a slightly more modern unit with a few differences. These TU5 engines have been developed by engine builders like Sandy Brown into 210bhp plus units.

Hi Cris
Many thanks for the info. I really like a revvy car as thats really what I like driving, fast changes up at the limit of the rev range. Great fun! I'm not really interested in loads of extra power to be honest. 100bhp at 900kg or thereabouts is enough for me and my driving licence ![]() Were 1.3 blocks difficult to source if you'd put a rod through one? I'm wondering if that was a reason so many have been changed as well. I shall keep searching! cheers Will |

Not many s1 Rallye cars came into the UK.
http://www.106rallyeforum.com/forum2...pageid=s1intro Last count less than 400 still known to DVLA. Less than 100 on the road. The engines will be hard to find in good nick these days I reckon. 25 years, likely many owners, revvy engine, probably abused! Part of the issue is that they’re not used in anything else so they have always been hard to find as a spare part. They do come up here from time to time.

Hi. That's a good point re non-uk cars..I prefer LHD cars but looking around the cars seem more expensive in Europe than here.

The XSI is considered a 1400 although 1360cc
IIRC, the 1300 Rallye was 1294cc

![]() Yes, it was an MFZ. The engine bay is identical to a Rallye, inlet, airbox the lot. There seem to be a few kicking about in Portugal after some brief research. The only thing out of place is some of them have aircon. I suspect Peugeot did a run of 1.3 XSi to lower manufacturing costs of the 1.3 engine along with its gearbox. |

We have a few Portuguese visitors on here. Maybe we’ll get an answer

Hi
Yes in Portugal we have the Peugeot 106 XSI 1.3 exactly same engine as Rallye. We also had 50 106 rallye R2 with Devill exhaust system, Green air induction filter and different head setup from factory. Nice little cars!!! |

![]() I knew about the R2, it's a pity they only came out in Portugal. Quote:
1700 though! I'm assuming you're not using the standard crank anymore? |
