CSCC Tin Top Racer

Well, another season is just around the corner. The new old car is just about ready to break cover. Many thanks to all those people that have supplied parts and info in the past few weeks.

I can't believe it is only seven weeks since we bought the Peugeot and decided we would re prepare the car for this season and move the Clio 172 on to pastures new.

An enormous amount of work, time and effort has gone into the car (Mark,Matt,John,Myself). An entry has been sent off for the Brands Hatch round of the CSCC series on May 6th. Prior to this we will be testing the car as, since buying the car, I haven't actually driven it yet!

The last few pieces of the puzzle have fallen into place over the last few days and set up on the rollers has addressed some fuelling issues we were having as well as a bad earth fault that caused an intermittent misfire!

This weekend saw the replacement of some worn suspension bushed front and rear, re bleeding of the brakes, tracking and a few other small jobs.

I'm sure more things will arise once the car has been run in anger. A full report on the transformation of the car and its first shake down will follow in the next few weeks.

Class A car competing against 300bhp Integras driven by ex-touring car drivers (Mike Jordan)! I'm realistic enough to realise I couldn't compete in terms of car (cost) or driving ability! ;-)
Now have a class D car in which to learn and improve and maybe get a class win which I would never get in the Clio.

At Anglesey it was a current ToCa driver- Andrew Jordan!
You haven't bought Andrew Tsang's 106 have you? Or maybe Jamie's?

Have you bought a 106, (as in Andrew Tsang's or Jamie Rumbelow's maybe) or built one?

Well, bar a few last minute adjustments that need to be made this weekend before Donnington on Monday, the 106 is just about ready for its first shakedown.

List of jobs for the weekend are:

Fit second box to exhaust as the single box system registers 100dB!
Relocate race battery into passenger footwell in battery box.
Final once over with the spanners.
Get a set of old race tyres onto our spare S2 steels for first few laps.

The car is currently sitting on S1 steels onto which we will be fitting some rain tyres (british summers and all that!)

Further updates after Mondays test.

Well, the Donnington test had its up and downs! A bent stub axle was only one of the fixes we have had to do over the last 3 weeks.!

Anyway, the car is just about finished, again, and will be at Brands Hatch on Bank Holiday Monday. Qualifying is 11:00 am and the race is 16:40pm.

Will get a pic up of the car at Donnington later.

Cheers for now.

Cool. Nice pic.

Well, apart from being shunted from behind by a Nova, a great debut for the car. Second in class and 20th overall. The shunt broke the exhaust which blew more and more as the race went on, losing power. Had a great scrap with a Clio over 7 or 8 laps and generally had a brilliant time. John drove his stint brilliantly and bought the car home.

Race report and footage will follow once I've recovered.

Cadwell Park was our second outing if the season with the 106. A few adjustments were required after Brands, mainly adjusting the satch shift which had jammed on me and replacing the bolts that had dropped out if the manifold to system joint! (Now lock washer and double nutted)
We tested at Cadwell 3 weeks ago and all was well. During qualifying however, the car was squirming on the brakes going into Park which caused a few heart stopping moments at 110mph!
Between qualifying and the race, the team bled the brakes and we altered the brake bias to prevent the rears locking. There is more of an issue here but we have yet to look into it!
We had qualified 14th o/a and 1st in class. John had set the pace and I had some confidence up find! I took the first part of the race and got jumped on the start by 2 of the other 3 class D cars :-(.
Over the next few laps I got into it and managed to pass the Fiesta and chased down the Nova that was leading the class. The car was feeling good and I was managing to take Coppice flat in fifth. The Nova then started to slow and I was past and into 1st in class. The safety car was then deployed as the class D Fiesta had expired at the top of the mountain. I stayed out for 3 laps behind the safety car then pitted the lap after it came in to hand over to John.
John drove his stint brilliantly and found himself in 9th overall as more cars expired in the heat of Cadwell. As the field stretched out, John enjoyed a relatively clear track and strand together some consistently quick laps with his best a 1:48 two laps before the end.
So, 9th overall and 1st in class. A brilliant days sport and huge thanks to the team for all the hard work and support.

Next stop for the 106 is Pembrey on 3 and 4th of August. 2 races for the price of one and a full weekends fun. I will be driving solo as John, my co driver, is on holiday!
The brake issue appears to have been down to a Goodrich hose that has been kinking. This has meant slight binding of the brakes and boiling of the fluid.
So, I have invested in full length Goodrich hoses from the master cylinder to the calipers, new discs and the brakes will be fully re-bled.
We also have a new set of Dunlops which I will scrub in ready for either race 2, or Donington, depending on wear during race 1.
The car will now be slightly lighter as we have fitted a fibreglass bonnet and tailgate.
The car will probably be going up for sale after Pembrey to raise funds for our new race project. Watch this space for more info.

No, didn't go to Combe.
Will be doing Donington, Oulton and see where we are after that before we decide on Snet at the end of the season.
If the car sells at any point after Pembrey, we'll just crack on with the new car.
When are you out next?

Well, it's official. The 106 will be up for sale after Pembrey this weekend. Our new car is moving ahead rapidly and therefore, if a buyer is found, the S1 will make way for our new S2.

I will try and post updates of the weekends progress over the weekend. It's going to be busy in class D as there are 7 entries!

Here we go again. :-)

Pembrey was definitely a tale of two completely different days. Saturday dawned dry and sunny after a night of rain and little sleep. My first time at the circuit since I'd spectated from a distance nearly 20 years before! Qualifying went quite well, with me ending up second in class and 14th out of 25 cars and only .5 behind Marshall in his Alfa.
By the time we were called to assembly, the temperature had soured to 25 degrees and I was thankful I had fitted the camelback the week before. I made a good start and had closed up behind the Alfa going into the first hairpin. The next few laps saw me and the Alfa trading places for 1st in class. As soon as the pit window opened after 10mins, the team signalled for me to come and get the driver change done, which involved me jumping out of the car, closing the door, only to open it again and jump back in! With a clear track in front of me, I proceeded to push on and get in some consistent lap times. It was only 2-3 laps later that I saw Marshall and his Alfa parked at the side of the track, and pit board confirmed I was up to first in class. the rest of the race was fairly uneventful, although I did manage to lap a couple of the other class D cars toward the end of the race. As the chequered flag fell, I had managed 1st in class and 10th overall.
Saturday night was the awards dinner in the bar where we picked our trophy and then made our way back to the tents, where, within the hour it was raining again. This time, the rain didn't stop all night. By dawn the paddock was awash and the rain was still falling come 10:00am which was to be a practice session for the all omers race. A drivers briefing was called and a rolling start from behind the safety car was deemed to be the safest way to get the race underway.
The conditions for the race were terrible. There were large parts of the track covered with standing water, and the rain was coming down as heavy as ever. The start went according to plan and the field soon settled into a steady procession, with not many overtakes due to the huge amount of spray coming off the car in front. There were several retirements and multiple pits stops due to windscreens steaming up, but I managed to keep going despite the odd shower from a hole in the floor pan! Toward the end of the race there was a safety car deployed due to one of the class d fiestas expiring just after the hairpin, but it soon went back in and the last few laps were completed. Again I had finished 1st in class D and 7th overall.
All that remained was to pack everything up in the pouring rain and then drive the 6 hours home!
A great weekends racing and huge thanks to the team for making it all possible.

Car now advertised on Pistonheads. That said, we are at Donington on Saturday for the next round of the Tin Tops series. A finish should see us class winners for 2013. Race report to follow next week.

CSCC Tin Tops Donington 24/8/13 Race report

Donington Park provided the next instalment of the 2013 Tin Tops series. This is the event I entered last year as my very first race, which turned out to be very eventful.
This time around it is AWS Racings 5th outing with the 106 and after a 2nd in class at Brands, we have won the class at Cadwell, twice at Pembrey and so hopes were high for Donington.
Initially class D only had 3 entries including us, however, as we set up in the paddock we saw more and more class D cars arriving. The one to watch, we had been told, was the XR2 of Lewis Williams, with a reputed 20k under the bonnet!
Qualifying came around and we posted a time which put us 24th out of 33 starters. The XR2 was some 2.5 seconds a lap quicker and several places ahead on the grid.
For Donington, due to time constraints and a huge turnout, our race was to have a rolling start. This involved forming up behind the pace car on an out lap and then racing gets under way after the safety car has puled off and the start lights go out.
It seems many competitors were napping as we approached the start line because as the lights went out, I overtook at least 6 cars ahead of me. Into Redgate for the first time on cold tyres 3 abreast, the 106 snapped sideways and it took lots of arm flailing and a boot full of throttle to get it back, although I maintained my position! After several frantic laps, things settled down and I was lapping consistently. This is when I saw the XR2 gaining on me and inevitably, he came past and started to gap me. I was then being closed down by a Saxo that had also out qualified us, although, when it did get past, there was nothing between us.
After several laps of chasing the Saxo, the yellow flags came out and the safety car was deployed due to the class D Nova breaking down on the run up to Copse. After 2 laps behind the safety car the Saxo pulled into the pits. We stayed out for 1 more lap and came in to the pits as the safety car pulled in and racing was back under way.
A quick driver changed followed and John took to the circuit. He now had a 13 second lead over the XR2 which had obviously had a slower pit stop than us.
The second half of the race went by very slowly as lap after lap, the XR2 gained on the 106.
John was driving well and the time was ticking down. The only traffic John had was the front running class A cars that lapped him toward the end of the race. As the clock ticked down to 40mins, we had done it. John crossed the line 5 secs ahead of the XR2 and another class win was in the bag. Not only that, we were 14th overall out of a field of 33, 15 or more of which were class A cars (2.0 16v)!
A fantastic end to the season for the 106 and AWS Racing. We have decided that as the car has now won the class for this season, we will not be competing at Oulton Park. The car is for sale and got quite a bit of interest at Donington, so it would be wrong to risk the car for no gain.
I now have a bit of time to compile the race footage we have collected along the way this season which I will be putting on Youtube soon.
Thanks for reading and roll on next season!
Race photos should appear on David Stallards website over the next couple of days:
