North West Sports & Saloons, Round 1, 2014

This Saturday, 29th March sees the start of the season North West Sports & Saloons. We are at Oulton Park, using the full International circuit.
Due to the number of entries the organisers have decided to run a split grid. The sports cars (Caterfields etc) and the specials will be in one race, whilst the saloons (tin tops) will be in another race.
As per usual, we are in Class F (up to 1600cc) and will be racing against the Fiestas, and a new 106 GTi too. The 106 is of similar spec to mine so it will be interesting to comapre the two.

It has been a very quiet winter for us. No modifications to the car, other than servicing key components such as the gearbox and calipers. Other than that it will line up as it finished the last race.

So, if you find yourself at a loose end this saturday then pop along for a great days racing.

I'm not free & won't be on a weekend for ages while I'm building my funds up to finish the race car off, good luck to you all though Mike!!

Do you know who's driving the other 106? Or any of the spec? Will be interesting to see how they compare.

Thought you changed to a 20L alloy tank over winter to save weight mate?

No, not yet. Still accumulating the parts for that.

The other 106 has fibreglass panels, forged motor, itb's etc. looks like he's been doing a few days testing too.
I can only affect my performance so am not worrying about that car tbh.

It'll be the fiesta that'll probably be your battle. Experience racing will help you a lot against the other 106 if its got a decent motor, may only be pushing 180bhp, could be more of a competition if it has 200+bhp, all fun though. suppose it'll hang on what his suspension setup is like compared to yours too. Doubt it'll be a problem at all with all the years experience you've had to set your car up.

Didn't you put pics of that fiesta written off mike? Has he switched it all to another shell or was it salvageable mate? Have you got any races on anglesey this year?? If you have I'll deffinatly pop over to watch!!

Good luck with the season this year mate!!

There are four regular Fiestas in my class. The 2 XR's are my main competition.
Paul Ingram did crash his red one, but it is being rebuilt and will be quicker than it was before. It will be down at minimum weight (640kg's) and with about 180bhp. It's also wide tracked and runs slicks.

I'll definitely be making a mark on my calendar for Donington, assuming you'll be there of course?

I'd come to the 1st Anglesey, but it's the anniversary with the other half, and she's on call here in Lincs!

I hear on the grape vine you had a very good day... Congratulations!

I was oop north today collecting a gearbox, so I was hoping to drop by to watch but I was far too late in the end. A friend of mine was there though and reported back. I must get along to one of these soon!

Bloody hell 640kg's is v.light!! would be a tough competition with less than 180bhp! Especially with the sounds of his suspension & the work put it to make it light I bet he focuses more on the chassis handling perfect than power as it could be pushing 200bhp if its a 1600 16v. The old one was fast enough!!lol your 106 is pretty well setup now though, bet its a hard competitor!

How did you get on mike?? Good by the sounds of it!? How did the other 106 get on?

Hope you have a good season!

Mike comfortably won his class, had a poor start, possibly being careful of the 'box off the line, but soon shot to the front of his class and controlled it from there. Excellent result!!!!

I honestly cannot see how a Fiesta can be down at 640 kg!

I can only say what I've been told, and what I saw on the eligibility scrutineers weight list. This is the same car that had the casting marks machined off the block. The level of detail in the weight loss is immense.

Anyway.........

Yesterday was a good day. We had a lovely, bright and dry day. Qualifying was at 10am, and there were a couple of damp patches from overnight rain. Druids, despite being re-surfaced was still treacherous.
No issues to report and managed to stick it on class pole, 12th overall with a 2:03.

The race was a bit boring really! Nothing like the races I was having with Graham last season.
As mentioned above, I took it really easy off the line, and was soon swamped by cars flying past me. Ooops, I took that a bit too easy!
It left me with a bit of work to do as the 'new 106' had got past and put a few cars between us.
The video will be up soon, and you can have a watch of that.

The end result was a class win and fastest lap too.

Next up is Anglesey, for a double header at the end of April

It wont be any more challenging.
I've raced at Anglesey seven times now and it's a brilliant circuit.
The challenge, as always, is to enjoy it and have fun. If we can get some good results along the way then that is a bonus.
