Hsustyle sensible Gti zzzz

Welcome to my new progress blog ya'll.
This is an attempt at keeping things a bit more sensible and practical for once compared to my old cars.

Starts like this..
Sold my 16v Skip Brown S1 to a member on here and Rallye Register, 4owners Harry_orridge. I top bloke and i'm sure he'll treat it well.
Quick pics for this who don't know it.

I then went on the hunt for a low owner, low mileage fairly standard Gti.
Plenty of timewasters and jokers out there but eventually found this one.

I've had it for two weeks or so now, drives well I guess and has all the refinements I was looking for with a cheap warm hatch.

IT'S NOT A F#!? ING QUICKSILVER.

So, moving on.
It's silver 2000
92k miles
12 months Mot & 6 months tax.
Immaculate interior and pretty clean paint
3 previous owners
Fair bit of service history
Standard apart from 2" full Pugsport and snazzy dvd headunit.

Plans are minimal really (he says).

-Sort Abs Light
-Full service
-Cambelt (just for piece of mind)
-Find some inner wheel arches as it has none fitted.

The fun bits..
As we all know there is no point having a Pugsport without a decent exhaust manifold so that's next up, need my pop and bang fix!
A more subtle headunit
Yellow tint driving lamps
Some steels (watch this space)
Red Rallye carpet and seat belts.
Clean up engine bay and get rid of the loud BMC DIA.

oh and fit the Compbrake quickshift that arrived yesterday and some uprated gear linkages too.

Pics, I only have three for now, it's currently filthy!

Looks very nice, standard height too? I thought you were being sensible? Pugsport and mani doesn't fall down that category.

Yup standard height
Pugsport should be compulsory on a 106 so that will stay. Current manifold looks ancient and ugly so that will have to go.
Quickshift was a must as the current gear throw is so long and floppy.

As for the steels, they are lighter than Raptors so my excuse there is better fuel economy?

Sensible enough though as a whole.

i fitted the pugsport from my s1 to my daily gti. it lasted 5 days and only because i had zero time to refit the standard exhaust sooner. either im getting too old for noise or the fact the gti has a full interior made it sound very boomey.
ive also fitted a quick shift and linkages id say they need them.

Same issue with mine, very boomy at certain revs. Sounded a lot higher pitched and tinny in my s1..So I stick to under 3k revs ha.

Sound any better with the parcel shelf out? You're putting me off buying a Pugsport now, hate boomyness.

My old S1 had no parcel shelf, no soundproofing in the boot under the rear seat. Was loud but raspy and you could hear every little pop and bang. A 4-1 or 4-2-1 might take away a bit of the boomyness? I'll report back soon on that one.

Oh man, just been offered some cheap Team dynamics Pro Rally 1s..must resist.

P.s I'm so cool.

Foamy lookalike was just some paper towel.
Fitted quickshift this morning, feels a lot better.

I then discovered a really fast slow puncture. Wooo. I no big deal right? I have two spares. Both with silly low thread! So one went on to keep me on the road but ideally I need new tires on three...New wheel time I think!

Day off, time to sort a few little niggles and give it a wash.
Gave up on cleaning engine bay after 5mins and whipped off the throttle body, dirty dirty icv!

Runs nice anyway but hey, I was bored and cleaning it will give at least 10bhp so it had to be done.

I gave the Quicksilver, erm I mean Gti a wash and a quick and wax to keep salt and mud off.

Interior was pretty clean so I didn't got to town on that and just took a couple of snap, overall mint not a single mark anywhere.

I let it run for 5mins, then sprayed grubby areas with brake cleaner and a lot of fun just ran straight off.
Then an old rag and lots of WD40 and elbow greasy. Thought about removing and respraying rocker covers but will leave that for another time.

Will drop the engine out next month and give the engine bay a respray.
All my old cars had tidy engine bays, this one needs a bit of attention.

You will have to push this one along. Feels gutless compared to the Rallye but it's so much more comfortable.
Pugsport and BMC are up for sale soon for standard ones instead.

Oh oh...
Only just got noticed the bulbs in both my driving lamps (fogs) have gone.
Also my fuel gauge got stuck at half full for ages a good 30miles with no movement..
Disconnected battery for 30 seconds and it kicked back to life.

Happy Gti

Also have a 4-2-1 manifold, GrpN gear linkgaes and new exhaust hangers to fit on fri.
Cam covers will come off for a polish and reseal. This will no doubt kick start an obsession with tidying up the engine bay bit dirty compared to my old cars..

+5bhp coz itz matte red..
Will help the engine to rev a bit more freely and give me some more high end power and a more raspy exhaust note. Before and after video coming soon.

More sensible and low key headunit fitted. That chavtastic DVD jobbie was going to put me in a hedge..
Also bought some Gti floor mats to make the car heavier!

Also in gay silver? Plans are to keep it looking totally OE other than under the bonnet and uprated suspension. This whole standard look and ride height is growing on me.
Ordered Peugeot 106 badges for the boot today.
Had to put some Rallye Register member stickers in the rear windows, reppin it!

Yes in totally gay silver! Was a lovely car and totally standard, only had 35k on the clock when I had it.

youve lasted longer than me with the pugsport then lol. even with the parcel shelf out it didnt make a difference. glad that headunits gone. i keep toying with the idea of selling my rallye and sticking some of the nice bits on the gti and having a al round daily/track toy.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!
You know when you lose that a part comes loose without any drilling out, rounded off bolts etc?

Not the case with my manifold.. Standard one was pretty much rusted on so I attacked it with a blow torch, WD40 and the Persuader (hammer).

Surprisingly all the studs and bolts came off fairly easy apart from one right underneath, the most awkward one to reach. I spend an hour drilling, hammering and generally threatening it.
Just went to buy some hardcore drill pieces and a few hacksaw blades.
Lambda sensor is still in old manifold so that will no doubt give me grief too.woooo

The 4-2-1 manifold is an attempt to replace the boomy exhaust note with a bit more rasp. My old Rallye was louder but higher pitched and really not too bad.

This gti is really growing on me although there better tires are needed soo, top much understeer and generally a bit vague feeling.
All in all I won't be spending very much on it.

No major updates or changed to this.
Manifold fitted, now bogs down and runs rich..
I have replaced
injectors
Fuel pump
Fuel filter
Resealed all exhaust joints and checked for leaks
New coolant temp sensor

Still does it which pretty much points all fingers at the lambda sensor.

Apart from that it's great, comfy and a good daily.
Less boomy and bassy now that I fitted the 4-2-1 manifold and I've got that raspy note back.
I fitted gti Floor mats and added an Aux in cable.

Other updstes-
Washer jet pump doesn't work ordered a smaller tank and pump off eBay.
Fitted new fuse for front driving lamps and applied LaminX yellow tint.

Also gear selector controller has lots of play in it, gearstick had a lot of play in it side to side. The usually its a small pin that's worn out in the controller arm. Will need to be drilled out and replaced with a bigger bolt. Such an awkward angle do i may just have to deal with it until I get a better excuse to get the box off.

Lil moment of weakness resulted in my car now having an OMP GrpA INOX Stainless steel exhaust fitted.
Cheeky deal was done on my mint Pugsport and my old standard exhaust manifold.

It's the stainless steel version, not the GrN mild steel.
This thing is Crazy.. A lot louder and it pops, splutters, burbles and pops like a grpB rally car now. It's almost overkill!
Will run it for a week and probably go back to a Pugsport which is a bit more refined and quiet.
Would have loved this on my old 16v Rallye.

I'll upload a video of the OMP later, it's a lot louder on full chat but the quietest decat exhaust I have had when it's idling or or part throttle. Could hardly hear it cruising on the way which was a pleasant change to the bassy droning of the Pugsport!

A 421 did take away a fair bit of droney bass with the Pugsport but it's still loud around 3-4k revs. Happy
Small difference, no miracles. No top rip I'm afraid

Before..

After..

Also resealed my camera covers and polished them, pics when it's light. Refitted the Inox properly today as it was blowing from the manifold because I didn't align it properly when fitting it before.

Will come off again tonight as it's just sold..
Now on the hunt for a 2" Pugsport to replace it.

Well well what's new.. Not a lot.
Arty engine bay shot

I had a standard system fitted after the OMP and it was just too boring. I replaced cat with a Scorpion decat pipe and it freed up the revs nicely. Added a raspy note too.
My 4-2-1 is angled up too hight which resulted in the exhaust system knocking on front ARB.
So...
Pugsport back on

Beady beadyness

Looking good! I'm quite impressed with my decatted standard system - only thing missing is some pops and bangs.

Thought you were getting rid of the BMC? "Too noisy" you said!

I'm working on that! Finding it hard to find a standard Airbox set up. I wonder if an s1 Airbox will fit! ;-)

I got a few little pops with the decatted standard system, it soundes quite sporty.

Yup. What do you all think it's worth?
Just ticked over 93k miles
10 months Mot
3 months tax
Abs Light on
Small scrape on front bumper
Some play in gear selector rod on gearbox. Smooth and selects gears fine.

General cosmetic condition? Any recent mechanical work to speak of (aside from the bits you've done there)? ABS light could be a bit off-putting for folks who aren't spanner-handy, 1200? Not sure really, good GTI's are getting a bit rarer, but not enough to pump their values up a lot.

Overall very clean paintwork and mint interior, non smoking, without a mark.
I'll have the ABS light diagnosed next week.

Who knows Harv, who knows! went to test drive a ph 1 172, 1.8i Mx5 and even a friends Impreza Wrx turbo and for insurance, running costs and fun factor the Rallye came out on top.

Ha yea the Gtsilver served me well as what I wanted it to be, a reliable runabout.

Had a red 306 Rallye in the past, plenty of white ones on the market but I was after a black one with only 100made.
I couldn't believe how much interest I had in the Gti!
