Despite the weather it turned out to be a good day. I had an early morning session which was like driving on an ice rink on semi slicks which made it pretty interesting . The car was pulling really well and I'm sure surprised a lot of bigger cars on the day, especially when I got asked on numerous occasions in the paddock area 'what engine are you running!?' followed by '1.4 8v!? no way!!'

I had a second session at 1.45pm and by that time the track had started to dry up which was great news since I'd struggled with traction earlier in the morning. The car was going very well indeed until my final lap when I passed an Impreza coming out of Quarry on to the straight, and as I went into the tight chicane the water hose on the bottom of the thermostat blew leaking all the water.

So a good day in all, it was unfortunate it was cut slightly short due to that but it certainly allowed me to get a feel for the car having not driven a 106 fast in a while.

What can I take from this - Invest in silicon hoses, had a few issues selecting gears due to knocking the manifold, so I'll need to seriously look at getting a satchshift (I know I keep threatening it!). I also need to look at improving the stopping power, although now that you've mentioned that Pete it might be worth me looking at a larger master cylinder. The LSD and gearbox will transform the car, if it's pulling this well now then it should be a competitive little motor once all the tweaks have been made and I've had time to get use to it.

I also have a couple of videos which I'll post up once they're ready this week.

Cheers

No harm in trying it. I can't remember if you have a bias valve fitted. Could be that the load compensator is screwed (if you still have it).

No ideas Pete! The brakes are on my to do list, I have a bias valve albeit not fitted yet and a hydraulic handbrake again not fitted, mainly due to holding off until I know where there's room following the arrival of the satchshift. I also need to move the lines inside.

The height of the back of the car isn't too bad to be honest just it seemed higher than previous, but like i've now found out makes perfect sense when fitting larger torsion bars. I may adjust it by a few mm again, it's handy the torsion bars aren't seized! lol

Mike - It's a low mileage vts gearbox with S1 Rallye FD. The box is a good one and still pretty tight tbh, so will make a perfect spare.

Dunc - Just never felt confident with the brakes, seems like there is too much travel perhaps. I'm not 100% sure what pads I have fitted either. Last year I was running 247mm gti set up and 1144 pads and it was far superior in my opinion. I have a set of group A spec 1177 pads too which are supposed to be awesome on a 247mm set up, so I'm thinking of going back to them.

I'm in the market now to purchase some silicon hoses. Can anyone suggest where the best place for me to buy them?

just found this too -

Cheers buddy! I got let down by one of the water hoses on the last lap unfortunately, although it was great fun up until then!

Still waiting on my mate to edit the video!

Lol big bottle is certainly the best way but quite difficult with licensing and rental unless there is another option?

Just bought a brand new 1.1 gearbox cheap to build the dog box up.

Looks like the front is diving under braking. Assuming you are braking in that picture.

Yes from what I gather it's basically a 205 gti gear set? I'm sure the FD will more than likely be changed.

Lol maybe Pete, not sure tbh although the ride height does seem pretty level parked up so perhaps I was.

Good!

Actually thinking about it Pete. Yes It will be diving a little. The rear end setup is how it will be staying whilst the front setup is currently on b8 and faulkners so a little soft tbh. I have 250+ lb springs and coilovers to go in the front plus smaller ARB which will be on soon.

I looked into this last year and found a supply of medium rent free bottles. You pay a deposit on the bottle, then take it back when empty and pick up a full one.

Gas details are here http://www.hobbyweld.co.uk/?page=1&t=Home. I got mine through a dealer - http://www.cheltenhamweldingsupplies.co.uk/index.asp. They maybe the nearest stockest for you.

It work out a lot cheeper than the small disposable bottles, or a low useage on a larger rental bottle

I finally managed to get my mate to take the video off his video camera which we fixed inside the car in Castle Combe. Unfortunately the camera moves slightly so apologies for the quality. Theres a little bit of entertainment too!

Despite thinking at the time that it was cooked! It turned out to be a split that formed in one of the heater take off hoses, managed to repair it and get it going again. Still good to go!

I'm after some suggestions from you guys.

I'm totally stuck when it comes to fitting a filter to my itb's. I have a large ITG filter which is way to big to fit without cutting the bonnet, I also have a smaller Pipercross sausage filter and that again would require the bonnet cutting to fit. The wiper motor is very close to both but not the issue, the main issue is that both filters kick upwards and would require a huge hole cut in the bonnet to allow for the bonnet to close.

I'm thinking my only option is filter socks, unless you guys can suggest anything?

Cheers

Small update

Finally managed to butcher the filter and get it fitted properly. I had to make up a new backplate and decided to use some carbon fibre. I've also lightened all the wiper mech.

Nice update coming up this week!

All in good time Mike!

The bonnet closes fine although I had to cut part of the cross brace off the bonnet and had to cut a piece off the filter too.

The car is all ready for FCS. I've basically spent my time this month trying to iron out any issues that came up on the spring action day, including replacing the damaged hose!

I spent part of today adjusting the rear ride height. It now seats 40mm lower than standard or there about's, looks a lot better too, and hopefully this should make a noticeable difference in FCS.

I've also wired in my intercom.

Also fitted my Demon Tweeks Pole position sponsorship stickers. What do you guys think?

And finally... picked up a new 1.1 gearbox ready for Gripper to do there stuff.

Cheers

Good progress, would of liked to make Fcs this year but at work. The rear ride height looks good, the front looks as if it's higher though in that picture?

Cheers guys.

Looks more purposeful with the stickers.

It's around level with the front Scott, but when I fit my coilovers it will certainly be lower in the front.

I sent a set of XSI alloys off for shot blasting last week, I've been thinking of painting them either black or gold.
Any suggestions on colour?
