Good news for anyone with the square end pads (like the ones the 307 uses, mintex code MDB2283), proven-products will do a set of pads in 1144 material for £65 inc. VAT.
A bit cheaper than the £100 everyone else has been quoting! |

23mm Master Cylinder questions/ 266mm or 280mm brakes??
Master cylinder enquiry.......Just been looking on www.brakesint.co.uk ,ive realised to get rid of pedal travel, I'll need a 23mm master cylinder from a 406 2.0 16v non abs model, which one though?? :
Part numbers: bmc4816 (non abs 4 port...cast) , bmc5134 (non abs 4 port...aluminium) Both are 'cheap as chips' brand new (both under £50!! Thats new!!) Im assuming the aluminium one will be lighter, so do I buy that one?? My car is a S1 rallye, standard brakes at moment with braided hoses...been offered 266mm brakes or 280mm....which ones should i chose?? I run 15" compomotives and cant be arsed with rear disk conversion, drums will do me fine Some one wanna answer my questions ![]() |

Hi Guys, after reading this and getting very confused i just went by trial and error and luckily it worked out well !
I have an 1995 S1 rallye I bought 2001 206 GTI calipers, these had round edged pads and the bosch two bolt type I then bought some 27mm offset discs from halfords which were meant for a 306 XSI and Halfords part HBD337 It all went on very easy with no grinding needed ![]() it works really well, thanks for the help If any1 wants my old set up which was OE rallye bendix s1 calipers, discs and pads they can come round my house and collect them for free(oxford), one of the nipples on the drivers side caliper has snapped off tho, plus i snapped a nipple removal tool in the hole. an engineering company might be able to get it out tho. its good to recycle! |

any1 find the steering a bit heavier after the conversion ? i did ? although i dont particulary mind it, spose its a bit bad that my car isnt OE anymore. just cant justify that massive price for bendix calipers
Got some new toyo proxes tyres the other day and now the steering is ultra light ! wierd eh ? maybe they need running in or somthing |

That's £205 all in for a brand new setup. Fitting took 1 1/2hrs with a bit of help from a friend bleeding them. Yellow paint took several coats to get a good finish but looks good peeping through the steelies. Hi all, my car has falied its MOT due to a "twisted" brake line. The line is the original 106 gti one going into a 206 caliper. tonight ive been trying to find diffrent ways of altering the point where it tightens up fully ..to no avail.
ive noticed the threaded bore for the brake hose on the 106 caliper is drilled in dead square unlike the 206 ones. No matter what i do it seems that the o/s line will always seem a bit too long/twisted/rubbing on the body of the car. Is there such a connection that could be tightened into the caliper at any angle? something around 45 degree`s might do the trick. a 90 degree connection would be worse. anyone know of how i could get around this? its lowered 60mm and funnily enough the n/s looks fine. I might put the original ones back on until i source something that will flow nicely. cheers |

Just done this conversion
![]() Reading this thread i found it to be very confusing and not really a definative thread as there are so many variants of the 206 gti caliper it seems. When i was buying my disks i used the information i found on www.brakesint.co.uk it said on there that the pre 2000 (rounded end pad) calipers used the 27.9mm offset disk and the post 2000 (square ended pad) calipers used the 34mm ones. As for the caliper bolts im not quite sure what everyone was on about as i didnt really have this problem :S mine bolted straight onto the strut with just an m12 washer. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() hope this helps! |

hey guys, I've looked around quite a bit on the forum and got even more confused on brakes. What are 1144's and DS2500??
I have a 106 gti with, I think, standard discs and calipers( Lucas is written on it...dunno), so I'm guessing they are the 247mm discs. I've been wanting a bit of an upgrade as the rest of the car is being upgraded but I'm really a total loss when it comes to brakes. What bugs me on my current brake setup is that I cannot reach the gas pedal with my heel. I had other cars before and used to do toe and heel the whole time so I'm kind of addicted to it and it feels strange to have to feel strong engine brakes. apart from that it seems that after some time the brake force fades quickly.... I liked the 206 idea of fitting the 266mm ones but I heard of so many sizes i got confused big time. Any help please what might be good for my 106 the above considering that I may be entering a local hill climb competition.....thanks Last edited by divinu; 09-05-2009 at 05:41 PM. Ferodo DS2500 and Mintex 1144 are types of brake pad compound, both aimed at track use.
Gti calipers are ATE as standard I think? For 266 brakes i'd look at either the 206 gti calipers (can also be found on hdi and some 307 models) or 306 Xsi/S16 calipers (Lucas). I'm running the latter with DS2500 pads and they are quite honestly amazing.

Its easy jazzle. Go with bosch for ease of fitment and a slightly larger pad. 306hdi is going to be your easiest and cheapest target

ZX, pretty much all, discs will go straight on too, Xsara, same as before, 306, same as before.
models to look for are 2.0 XSi and HDI, possibly 1.8 XS, anything lower spec tends to have ATE 247mm brakes like the 16v 106/saxo. 206 and very low spec 307 also have 266mm brakes, as do C2's, C3's, boggo C4's Blingo/partner vans are 306/xsara front ends, same brakes, all 266mm, varying offsets. 405 and boggo 406 have 266mm discs, but very wrong hub offsets. |

Quick question -
Will using the Bosch-spec disc with the 34mm offset actually push my wheels 7mm further out of the arches compared to the 27mm disc/standard? Or is it a case of the actual brake disc is mounted further towards the strut? Just they'll be pretty wide as they are... |

Hello to every body.
Good thread but many words ... The main problem is the many people take calipers on e-bay or some where and disks from another mans. The disks from different cars have different offset! Is it is? Help me please. Will The 266mm 306/xantia brakes (calipers and disks) bolt on if i take it from 1 car at all? |

Thought this might be useful -
Brake pads sizes, from top to bottom, Lucas, BOSCH type 1, BOSCH type 2 ![]() The only notable exceptions are the rarer BOSCH type 3 caliper and the Lucas 'Sabretooth' caliper. But as you can see, there isn't much to choose between any of the most common 266mm variants. |

I'm just curious how the larger discs have affected your brake bias? I'm assuming that it has moved it even farther forward (because the piston size hasn't changed). This would technically give you worse, i.e. longer braking distances because you're using less of the rear brakes. You may feel more bite due to more brake torque but but you won't improve the stopping distances. Now, you'll definitely improve brake fade issues having the larger rotor, and that's desirable for lapping days. So question is, will using the master cylinder that came with the calipers provide you with the proper brake bias? How much larger are the rear rotors on the 206GTi compared to an S1? |

changing the master cylinder is really down to personal preference, certainly wont change the front/rear bias as they are the same size for front and rear ports unless you use a bias pedal box with separate master cylinders.
same size rotors, same calipers on most too, though high spec cars have 32mm piston not 30mm. |

Right, now I have the post 2000 calipers and just using my standard 247mm disc with 34mm offset on a trial assemble.
When all fitted up the disc isn't in the middle of the carrier. It has a very small gap to one side of the disc ans a large gap the other... Can anyone confirm they have the same as this/this is correct? |

It's gotten a bit difficult to read this thread hasn't it? Basically, if you find a donor car with 266mm brakes, get EVERYTHING from it, i.e. discs, pads, calipers, carriers, mounting bolts etc. At least you'll be able to match the pad shape and disc spec from them to get new parts, even if you don't want to use the old bits.

yeap, easily identifiable as 306 S16 or ZX 16v due to the fang on the pad carrier.
quite a small pad but still a decent upgrade with the right pad material without the weight of a 283 setup. |
