Well, you can put a cat B back on the road as long as it's repaired correctly.

Might need a special insurance policy from someone like Adrian Flux etc. most insurers won't touch a cat B.

You can even put a cat A back on the road! it all depends on the damage and quality of the repairs.

I'm sure a cat B is parts only? A is crush as is (no parts removal) are you selling it mate?

CAT A - Scrap
CAT B - Parts salvageable but not to be back on road (I didn't think a generic member of public could sell the bits on)
CAT C - Roadworthy but needed VIC
CAT D - Minor repairs

They've changed it up now using different letters

these are the new categories https://www.gov.uk/scrapped-and-writ...ance-writeoffs

There is no VIC scheme any more either

There's no LEGAL reason a Cat A or B can't go back on the road, it's just general acceptance that Cat A or B should be crushed to prevent ringing/cloning etc. For ecxample if you had a flood damaged Cat A write off (or fire) there would still be enough parts (drivetrain etc) to allow it to keeps its identity on a new shell - that's the easiest example. But even a buckled shell, could still retain enough parts to go onto another vehicle.

the problem is insurers won't generally touch cat A or B because of the severity of the damage previously. Companies like Adrian flux etc will insure Cat A or Cat B vehicle. This in itself is proof that these vehicles can be returned to the road - else why waste time and resources to provide the service.
