I get asked many questions about oil so I thought a thread here for all oil related questions would be a good idea and build into a FAQ or reference point for others.

So, put your oil questions here but please give the following information if you would like a recommendation:

for the engine upgrade to a 5w-40 syntheic for better quality, go for somehting decent such as teh Motul 8100 Xcess or if you want the best the ester based Silkolene Pro S 5w-40 here http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx##

For the gearbox a GL5 75w-80 such as the Fuchs Titan Sintopoid or the Redline Lightweight gear oil http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-670-75w-80-75w-85-mtfs.aspx

Any mods:

AX sport head, ported and made to suit a race/rally camshaft (310 degrees kentcam). Late type ax GTI lower engineblock (same as a 1.4 XSI cast Iron) which is lowered (shaved the top of) so it becomes a 1.3L again. Pistons pocketed. 4-1 manifold. Full race engine. Car is expected to drive on it's own power to the hillclimb/race site.

Track (and a bit of road sections)

Additional info (max oil temps, current oil used)

No Idea Engine is built (but not in car yet)

10w-40 synthetic is ideal for your S1, I am not convinced by the moly stuff personally, what other brands can you get?

Guy, at what temperatures do mineral engine oil and gear oil start to breakdown and oxidize? Also the same question for synthetics?
I am lead to believe, mineral oils start to fail at around 110-120*C and synthetics around 160*C, but i would really like to know for definate.

OK, I just thought you may have had some ball park figures for the more common high quality oils, such as Castrol mineral oils and maybe Valvoline synthetics etc?

I can get oil from this brands:
Motul
Esso
Castrol

I thought LM are the best.. they are also the most expensive here.. (Israel).

Also, can i have your recommendation for the type of Gear oil I should use ?

As i havent put oil in my car for a while, I have forgotten the advantages of fully synthetic oils over semi. I have used semi-synthetic 10w-40 for my s1 engine(83K) previously, is this the best choice? I think I steered away from fully synthetic 5w-40 thinking it was too extreeme(thin?) for everyday road use- would I be correct?

Had a look on opieoils, and the Mobil Super s 10w-40 semi-synth looks good (replacing head gasket soon...)

I would look at a decent 5w-40 synthetic for all year round use, high miles wont matter if the engine is in good shape, also dont be folled by people who say you must use semi syn thetic, its not true you can use either.

Year - 1987
Engine size/type - 2.2xu10 (gti6 hybrid)

Any mods - full race sandy brown engine 8k+ revs

Type of use (road/track) - track / hill

Additional info (max oil temps, current oil used) New engine so untested oil and filter changed after every event on the old engine just to be safe will do the same with this one

What do you want a recommendation for? Engine, Gearbox etc? engine

As i get through a lot of oil do you do offers for bulk orders?

I bet thats good fun, I know someone who is considering doing the same. what oil are you currently using? Unless oil temps are excessive I would look to use a 5w-40 synthetic for maximum power, ester base for maximum protection so have a look at the likes of the Silkolene Pro S and the Motul 300v. How often are you changing your oil?

Also, what gearbox are you using? The 5 speed from the 205 or the 6 speed from the GTI-6?

Thanks for the reply iv been changing the oil every event / trackday and the filter just to be safe with the old engine do think its wise to do this again or go for a diffrent oil and keep it in there for a bit longer? i was using 5w-50 synthetic valvoline last year but im looking what to use now and whats the best deal as i use a fair bit Gearbox i use 5speed with gripper plate diff.

If you go for something like the Silkolene Pro S 5w-40 it will give you 10 solid back to back track hours or 8-10,000 miles so you will get your moneys worth from it.

Sounds like a good buy then as i could safley leave it in there for two events or even three.
Would there be any additional discount if i bought 20L?

Im using the 5 speed be box 1.9 ratios 4.4cwp and a gripper plate diff.

Any mods: raceland induction, raceland 4-2-1 manifold, std centre pipe(pre cat), with stainless peco silencer

Type of use (road/track): mostly work horse but drive to and from work country roads so i like to give it a blast

Additional info (max oil temps, current oil used): dont often drive for long enough to get oil temp up:P using cheapy comma 10-40. i think its too thick as when i give it a blast the buckets/tappets get a little noisey.

the gearbox is a 1.4 xsi covered approx 90-95k using 75-90 cheap make.

a reccomendation for engine oil and if gearbox oil is ok to use?

For the engine I would upgrade to a decent 5w-40 synthetic, these should keep the tappets quiert on start up and during hard use.

75w-90 is ok for the gearbox, what brand is it you have?

erm its fuches titan gear syn 75-90. is this any good im planning on doing a track day in a month or so and depending on funds myb start doing a few more in the year. how often do you recomend changing the oil? i changed the gear oil around about 13-14000 miles ago? and the engine oil how often should i change? its my daily driver so i do about 100-150 miles a week

Been floating around for years that one, I am not convinced. The reason for this is the Falex test used, it really does not replicate anything to do with an engine, high temp, hi pressure, hydrodynamic lubrication, detergents, shear stability, fuel dilution... The list goes on. In some other tests on that maching they have used cutting oils and various other things such a beer to show that they can be better lubricators then the engine oils on the falex machine.

Any mods: head skimmed, 3 angle cut and seated valves, de-cat

Type of use (road/track): everyday road use - mainly short journies but also do long motorway runs now and again. Most driving conditions tbh.

Additional info (max oil temps, current oil used): 10w-40 semi synthetic oil currently being use as Peugeot recommends

What do you want a recommendation for? Engine, Gearbox etc? Both. I have a 56,000 mile 1.1 gearbox ready to go in which needs oil too
