ahhh ally TIG welding... to be honest bud thats really not a bad first effort on the stuff.... it looks thin.. 1.5mm?? 2mm?? so your kind of dropping yourself in at the deep end... the weld looks likes it run in on both edges..

the runs also look like there getting wider and flatter as you go along?? maybe turn the amps down a bit or go quicker?? the stop starts wont help appearance but if its watertight.. JOB DONE!!

yeh it is 1.5mm and the first time of making a tank so got a few things to learn yet my practice welds on a bit of flat were perfect, just on the joints its not quite as easy. Yeh it was up a bit hot as i hadnt turned it down from the mild steel i was doing earlier in the day But yeh as you say its water tight and you wont see much once its covered in powder coat and the wing over the top. So good enough for me. I gave myself a night off the car tonight and am going out for a meal so no updates. I may do a bit 2moro night and over the weekend

the knob wont be staying going to make one up to match the original handbrake one i think. The top mounts arrived on wednesday, cheers for that paul.

The tig, i did on our big 3 phase miller with a pedal. I have been playing with it a bit more yesterday and have got it running a bit neater now

No worries, 1st time i tried to weld ally was with a BIG Murex. 3 phase 600 amp monster, was about as big a armchair, water cooled torch, foot pedal the lot, the bloke who's it was set it up for the thin stuff he was doing, I had a go and a large area of ally vanished lol.

is it a miller synchrowave?? i think the 1 at work is the 300...

the foot pedal broke many years ago so its all on the switch now but once the slope in/slope out is setup its not too bad..

for ally you really need the torch water cooled or you end up wearing gauntlets to stop the torch burning your hand...

A slightly dull update im afraid, I have been quite busy building stratos chassis at work so no time to play  anyway

Washer bottle half made

Also won this item on ebay. I would have loved a 3 bar grill but the demand far too much money. This cost me 10 NOS item

And today have just won a 6 speed gearbox which i shall be trying to shoe horn into my tunnel wish i had managed to get hold of it before i finished my tunnel

Paul, we have Kemmpi at work - AMAZING welders! (ours is ex-renault F1 ) */willy waving*

Good project mate, I've never tried alloy sheet welding, but I know alloy does like to melt VERY fast lol, your strut brace looks pretty identical to the one we just fabricated in our 205, ours uses machined bosses to bolt through the inner arch, is yours just bolted to those brackets? the bosses stiffen it up no end

Another small update. I have never been a fan of the capri coloumn solution so am using caterham parts again as they are nice and simple and quite versatile items so pics of the new coloumn to modify

and i have started thinking about drop links, this is it so far

And the start of the tension struts

and very loosely tried on to check bend etc on them, i may try and finish them 2moro after work

The many uses of a 100e inner wing

Thats it for today

pretty much finished mocking them up now

plenty of clearence around the wheel

started to look at th anti roll bar, I was going to try and run it through the exsisting tube at the front but there will be no room for a drop link unfortunately. This will need to be thought through again now

Thats all for now cheers

I have decided on what to do anti roll bar wise now so have ordered some bushes to use. Untill they arrive i have started on making room for it to run

slightly more room for longer dorp links now

Just need to modify the ends to not get in the way of the wheel

Also after thinking id fucked up on the air box mount i had to chuck the bonnet on to check. Thankfully it only touches a small bit on the hinge mounting so will shave a little off it.

Also a stroke of luck my 106's rad fits between the hinges

I need to put a bit of tube in the hole i made for the arb to run through and then i need the bushes to arrive

Very small update im afraid as i have been busy buying a house

done a little bit of work on ARB again, nearly there now just need to order the proper droplinks so ignore the thrown together affair thats on there now

i get paid 2moro hopefully so will get some proper droplinks ordered

also these, won the lights on ebay for 99p, then spent 25 on brand new land rover lights. Just deciding what colours i want the lenses, im thinking possibly having them all clear but smoking them to go with the final theme of the car. My brother is in charge of converting them to run LED's and also squashing all 4 of the required lights in the the 2 lenses the lucky boy

thats all for now

Dan

Did a little bit more after work tonight, on the coloum mount. I wanted to use the original mounts as much as possible on this. But needed to redo it due to the pedalbox being in the way a bit and also my shiney new coloum

Need to tweek the position a little bit till its comfy, but fairly happy with it really. Also need to go and see my machinest mate to get him to knock something up to mount the wheel on the boss

Another update today spent the afternoon making some mounts and stuff so heres the pics

So starting with the wiper motor, and modified caterham mechanism

Brake pot mounted

Rad mounts kind of done, messed one of them up so need to redo it a little

Remote servo mounted

Under bonnet shot to make sure it all clears

Got bored later on so throw the panels on to make myself feel better about things

i may try and get the bulkhead finally welded up and smoothed off but will see how i feel

Dan

Have not updated this for a while so will copy and paste from elsewhere, ignore my ramblings

Right then, some new pics. Not very exciting but at least it is a little bit of progress :biggrin2: Have started cleaning up the floor to see what needs repairing and replacing. So far both sills which i was going to do anyway, both rear arches, both rear corner pieces and a couple of chassis outriggers which i have cut off. I will be removing the jacking points as i dont have the right jack for them anyway, I will replace them with a more substantial jacking point for a normal jack.

remains of outrigger

The front end which i have started cleaning up properly to see what its like, and for 50 years old its bloody good underneath all the crap

And off comes the sill

and a previous bodge i have found

Lower corners

rusty bits on front of inner arch and floor

arch and sill held in place to get an idea

Still very happy with the condition of the car, have put roll cages in cars with worse structures unfortunately (after fixing them of course)

And thats it up to date for now unfortunately i may be buying another house soon so this will be left alone yet again

bit more progress today, not as much as id hopef for the weekend but other plans happened

More work on the arch and rear corners, also chopped some more rusty bits out.

Panels just clamped on

Will try and make a little progress during the week to maybe start welding on this side next weekend

Have managed to bring a welder home for the weekend so hoping to get one side pretty much there so heres some pics from a couple of hours of work after getting home

replaced the lower part of inner sill i chopped off, the rest is solid so no need to make extra work for myself

floor replaced where the outrigger was, easier to do it this way then try and pick the mess off an outrigger off

And arch and rear lower corner tacked in place, and looking alright

All looking quite flush with original bodywork

Hoping to get more done 2moro
