s1 rallye with 16v vts lump. Oil Leak from above alternator. Possible Hg?.

Hi just recently noticed that my engine is losing oil from head gasket area, above alternator.
Engine is from a 98 saxo vts with around 72 thousand miles.

im sure i have read before that timmy b had similiar problem. my intention is to change head gasket an tensioners at the same time as i have an annoying rattling noise coming from around cam belt cover area, i disconnected alternator hoping that would be the cause but still no joy.
Fitted new clutch an release bearing, again no joy. do people think it could be tensioners?.

i cant imagine what else it could possibley be???.

is it worth having head skimmed?. as engine has not been cooked. just the annoying leak from head gasket.

cheers

Is it pissing out - i.e. it makes a noticeable puddle/patch on the floor when stationary?

It's a common problem, something that seems to hit most of these engine's at some point in it's life. If it's merely staining the block, forget about it - it's fine. If it's leaking and showing on the floor, change it like I did.

I can back up what Semtex and Timmy have just said

They all do it, even after you replace the head gasket it'll probably do it agian

If you think you have a rattle from the cambelt area get it sorted asap, a full cambelt kit will cost about 80-100 and don't forget to check the water pump while you're at it.
