Went to pugfest today, not as far from home as FCS but still far enough to be a tedious drive lol....

the 205 is not built for munching motorway miles.

some on the stand,

I also took the car up the hill, well be rude not too... drove well..!

Overall i enjoyed the day, never been before and didnt know what to expect. Wouldnt say its better than FCS but its a lot more laid back and relaxing..

More of a show where you park up with freinds have a barbie then enjoy looking at some nice motors blap up the hill.

Set off to Windsor this morning to pick this up,

Its a 89/90 alloy 1360cc XS engine producing 85hp, the engine ive been told has covered less than 100k miles but even if its done more it dosent concern me as its coming too bits..

It came as a full engine with box, exhaust's, shafts all ancillaries and two carbs. I just need to check the codes to see what gearbox it has etc..

Best buy my self a engine crane and stand then

Bought my self an engine crane and stand today as lets be honest building and fitting engines is nearly impossible without them lol..

up up and away,

having these allowed me to crack on well i say crack on i didnt start until two as i was late getting up as i didnt get in until late this morning anic:

box came off with ease, i cant find a code engraved on it like my rallye box but found this if anyone can identify it off this..?

and the shape of the bellhousing,

end of play it didnt really come on far, that wasnt out of choice but more the fact my windy gun stopped working so i couldnt get the last three flywheel botls out :wall:

Could be the stalk, get a DMM out and test! That'll tell you. Presumably you've checked the circuit fuse?

It'll be fused somewhere, get the Haynes out and see what it says, probably not that because something else would fail with it, but worth checking anyway.

Yeah ill have a look, cheers dude.

Planned to spend the weekend on the engine but that didnt happen, however spent a bit of time on it this afternoon starting with getting it on the stand.

this allowed me to strip the rest of it with ease.

everything came off like it was new, no siezed bolts, no stuck head nothing..!

covers off the belts.

head off with gasket in tack, no rips or signs of water/oil ways yet.

and gasket off, didnt realise there wouldnt be a fat bit of metal under neath lol.. no wonder these engines are so light

The bores are dirty but feel smooth and look ok to me...?

is there any checks i can do, ive got a haynes manual ive been flicking through but havent come accross "checks" or "putting it back together" yet.

thanks.

Right after some discussion with a few people it seems the general idea is that the pistons in the xs bottom end will drop my compression ratio too much and cause loss of power even though it has a greater capicity...

so the search for some domed pistons began.. Luckily for me i spotted an entire s1 1400 xsi engine for sale but the current owner wouldnt split the block so a deal was struck and a i picked it up this morning,

On the way home i was milling it over and im quite tempted to just use the cast bottom end with my rallye head or even build the j cam into the xsi head.... too many engines, too much choice lol.

Right today i whacked the xs lump back together so we can move it around easier for when its new owner comes to pick it up and had it off the engine stand onto a dolly.

Once that was off i had the xsi lump onto to the stand for a closer inspection.. it was apparent quite quickly the xsi lump differs to the xs plug wise at least massively... im guessing the plugs on the existing rallye engine will match the xsi engine..

up on the stand

whats this..? im guessing its a flywheel position sensor.. the xs defiantly didnt have that but cant remember seeing one on my rallye, well not that ive looked properly tbh.

Also im guessing this is the tensioner thats advised to be replaced when i put a new timing belt on..

And this is the water pump yes..?

worth changing while its on the stand..?

Opinions please.

Crank position sensor, Cambelt tensioner and Water pump, correct!

The Gates 8v belt kit is dead cheap, inc tensioner, so a worthwhile change. Water pump should be done at the same time. Make sure you get the right bits though, only the tensioner is the same as alloy block engine, the belt and water pump differ. Belt is 101 tooth 17mm wide.

Thanks Sandy dude, ill try and find a 1400xsi number reg so i can order the bits i need off that but will take note of your stats and take that with me to double check.

Things like the above ill buy new but i am to use all the ancillaries* off my existing rallye lump like starter motor, alternator etc as i know they work.

Like Sandy said change the tensioner it's dead cheap! go on eBay, think I paid 20 for a gates belt and new tensioner. Definitely change the water pump too, again it's dead cheap!

Ill probably buy them from the dealer so its genuine parts when i buy the headset tbh..

Well thats unless any of the factors supply the same parts just in a different box like GSF do with a lot of bmw parts lol.

I'm guessing youre talking about factors selling the same..?

Is that the brand "gates" then..?

Edit: and do they sell gaskets or just the belt..?

If you buy a Gates kit including the tensioner, the tensioner is in fact made buy INA as Gates don't manufacture tensioners.

With the MOT looming next month i though i better finish off every little niggle that may cause issues with the test so today saw the wishbone i split the balljoint boot on being changed..

New vs old

and fitted, after much cursing trying to get the chassis end bolt in

On the weekend just gone i had an hour to kill so i whipped the head off my XSI engine, domed pistons where a reasuring sight.. not that i doubted them being there just nice to see

so i had this sat on my floor,

The cam seems to be in good shape, the lobes are very smooth and dont seem to have scoring

The *journals isit..? do seem to have some scoring but its not a new engine and i dont "think" itll cause problems

Many tedious growns and tamtrums later

Still debaiting getting the head skimmed......

Picked up some bits this morning,

This little lot consists of

oem headgasket
oem head set
oem strech bolts
gates timing belt

All i need now is a belt tensioner, water pump and find someone locally to skim the head for me.

This is a really nice looking 205, I've always liked them. Your doing a great job of restoring it.

Have you thought about using the XSi engine internals and head with the alloy XS block for a lighter XSi engine?

If you wanted to replace your scored cam i have a spare XSi 'Z' cam in good condition that you can have for whatever it costs to post

Thanks, that was my original plan with the engine but interest has dwindled and I sold the alloy xs engine.

The plan is to simply rebuild the xsi lump and fit that.

Thanks for the offer but I already have a spare xsi head/cam.

Took the car over to Miles this morning and he changed all the connectors on the passenger side Indy and repeaters etc whichll solve all my niggling earth faults lol..

I also left my xsi head with him to be skimmed so once that's back I'll re-lap the valves and crack in building the engine.!!!

Had the car mot'd this afternoon and it passed..! Had to fiddle with the fog light and one of the number plate lights but no fails.

Just the one advisory for slight play in the steering rack which I'll be looking into.

They did question why it dosent have a cat but after a quick chat they tested it with pre cat rules.

Also worked out I've done 2800 miles in my first year of ownership, pretty good going IMO.

With a break in the recent wet weather and my first weekend for a while where i have nothing to do i thought it would be the best time to crack out the das6 i bought a while back that has just sat in its box..

Started off saturday morning With my usaul method and products,

Snow foamed
2bm wash inc shuts
2bm wash on wheels
Tardis
clayed with sonus fine (second clay this year)

that was the end of that day haha

this morning saw a quick wipe over with QD, i ran out of the megs i was using and always like to try something new so bought this

Seems more "wet" than the megs if that makes sence..?

after that came the machining, i havent done this before but knew the car needed a good correction so tried

5" orange pad
menz polish (a fairly fine one, about quater the way up the guide on the side)

The car came up really well, some panels needed going over more than others but i done the whole car to bring it up even..

some during,

And some afters, its annoying yellow is one of those colours that dosent really show reflections :/

It's not the best colour for reflection porn, but that looks absolutely fantastic. How long did the tape take to put on? I need to get my detail on, but struggling to build up the courage yet!

Contiuned with prep work before the heads back today, started off with cleaning the valves.. a job that dosent actully take as long as i thought it would haha

Then whack a coat of paint on the manifold, it looks patchy but thats just where i painted one side then flipped it and the other is still wet

All together progressive morning.

All thats left to do/buy is a new dipstick as both of mine are shot and a belt tensioner and water pump.

Spent an hour on the head this afternoon, started off by grinding the valves which is soo much easier with the thing you put in a cordless drill haha

New Stem valve seals on

After that i popped all the valves in as you do, i never want to see a collet again... tedious little things

That didnt take too long so i popped the cam shaft in to find the head set i bought from Peugeot dosent come with the cam shaft oil seal...????? not sure if thats normal or not..

Looking good! I'm not looking forward to putting mine back in a valver head - they're recessed quite a long way down the head...

Purely for comparison what did you pay for a skim?

Carried on with the engine today,

Picked up a cam seal as my dealer dosent seem to want to put them in a "headset"...

Then as per the haynes, i cleaned the carbon off the crowns

New gasket

Then came the nerve racking part of actully winding the head down.... went ok to be fair haha

Which leaves me now with timing it up then fitting the belt, with the new water pump and belt tensioner.

Not long now

Thanks,

Got the engine into its timing positions and locked it off ready for the belt

Followed by checking it manually just to be double sure

4 up

3 down

2 down

1 up

After that was done i gave the block a good clean to remove all contaniments and rust then painted in black VHT

Also test fitted the manifold as since buying it, its never seen an engine haha

Given the recent weather change I thought it best to have my tyres changed now than later as its not worth risking..

Winter tyres are great. Put the Bridgestones on the Audi weekend before last and such a difference just pulling out of junctions - loads more grip. Is that rear wiper blade completely shot?

Ordered a new aerial and base the other week and having a spare afternoon I set about it....

Before,

During, cleaned and ready (ignore how dirty the car is, local council decided to cut a tree down next to the rallye and aim the chainsaw over it :/ )

After, OEM goodness

As above about the seats, as for the block I honestly don't know..

Ive had my s1 rallye engine, a 205 xs and a 106 s1 xsi and they all looked the same in height.... nothing noticeable, maybe 106 moaners would be worth a look..?

Trying to pull my finger out and get back into cleaning again as im always slack over the winter so gave the car a wash this afternoon, came out well where it was waxed when I detailed it.. only problem is my wheels have gone funny

Three are in perfect condition still but the drivers right (used to be drivers rear until the tyre swop less than 200 miles ago) is covered in cracks and is chipping like fuck and the wheel underneath is all rusty.. originally I thought I have a seized brake calliper and its getting hot but it drives fine :/

One of my wheels had been painted with wood gloss in the past and Im wondering if its reacted as the others are fine.

I don't think its the powder coaters as ive used the guy for a few years now on various parts..

Not sure what to do to be honest, so far ive considered

Trying to find one wheel and have it coated

Try to find a pair so I have a spare

Get four steels and have them done in white as itll be more desirable for selling

Get alloys of some description

Still no updates on the engine yet either im afraid.

Planned not to touch the car until my other came back but as that's gone weeks over schedule ive decided to carry on with the Peugeot.. first up is a pile of wheels, new s1 steel to replace mine that's gone funny and four s2's to make another set..

Next up will be refurbishing these, buying service items then getting the front end off

Wheel time this afternoon after leaving them to fully cure by the radiator indoors for the week, all new toyo proxy cf1's where bought and I headed over with 9 rims haha

Im unsure if im honest.. being a dull colour has made them look smaller than before :/

Ignore the tyre soap, ive been a bit rushed so haven't had time to wipe them yet..

Opinion's..?

Had the car weighed this morning, as I always do..

Full tank upto the filler neck
Same weighbridge as usual

Came in at bang on 800kg which from my other thread comes to the conclusion fuel is around 35kg so say 30kg fuel out leaving enough for a couple hot laps on any uk circuit. Leaves me at 770kg which with my 100hp (could argue more with breathing mods) at 130horse power per tonne.

Bang on with a 106gti/Saxo vts.. Fair enough

Went to castle combe yesterday for the spring action day, this was my second year and yeah its a quiet show but I enjoy the mix of cars and its an excuse to have a quick blast on track haha

As my other project is still away I took the 205 and used it as a final send off for the 1300 alloy engine Ive been driving the car a lot lately and its been faultless.. pure smiles per miles..

I went out for a single slot on track as I really enjoy combe and the car didn't disappoint.. yeah everything over took me down the straights and its a full road set up so the tyres, 'soft suspension and oem brakes slowly give up but the balance of the car and the way it took the corners really really impressed me..!!

Id love to see how a well set up 205 could take the track..!!

few shots the girlfriend got as I passed

And a quick drive by in the crowd

We came home past a route I took for over a year coming home from work and always wanted to photograph.. quick shot with the 205

Which leaves me with throwing the timing belt on the 1400 and starting the engine strip after breakfast today..!!!!
