Instrumentation failure

I have a 106 GTI and recently all the instrument gauges will fail and go to zero whilst driving, for about a second or two, and then come back as normal. This happens once or twice on a 15/20 minute drive. The car behaves normally whilst this happens but obviously something ain't quite right! My garage suggested replacing the instrument pod as they don't think it's electrical. I'm not very mechanically savvy and I suggested it could be a relay of some kind but he said no. Just wondered if anyone else has had similar problems or any suggestions?

Thanks
Lawrence

Could be an earth fault, and worth checking the connections on the back of the clocks. Does it do it after a certain time or is it random?

It randomly happens after the car has been driven for 5/10 minutes. How would I/mechanic check an earth fault?

The fuse box inside the car, check the bottom left most fuse. take it out and reinsert it.

My 2001 GTi used to do this, sometimes the dials would even stick!
