My S1 tool

Bought this about 3 months ago. Fairly standard S1, just lowered a bit with a pugsport.
Got it home and stripped the back out pretty much straight away
Soon after this I swapped the front brakes for a set of 266mm ones off a 206, noticed the freshly refurbed steelies were going rusty so sprayed them again, and then the headgasket went from a slight seep to proper filling the oil with shit, and the bottom end knock got worse.
The MOT was coming up and I had a feeling I would struggle with emissions - getting 130 miles a tank indicated it was probably running a bit rich, so I thought balls to it and decided to change the lot!
After struggling to find a 16v for decent money, I came across a cheap S1 engine that was close by, and ran over to pick it up.

A week was booked off work and I fitted the engine with jon_ox returning my favours of helpign him swap engines into his 106s over the years, along with a new lambda sensor to get her running right.

After a bit of a drama with the tappets on the new engine being set to have less than zero clearance, I got the new engine running, did a few miles to make sure all was well and last night fitted the cat and borrowed an exhaust off RUSS16V, took her for the MOT this morning and by some fluke she passed straight through! Tester advised me the rear brake % was quite low, so I'll replace the drums and shoes next time I have a day off.

Future plans include blowing the engine up going round Cadwell at the end of the month, Fitting the Spax adjustable kit that I got new for 60 from work, fitting a Raceland manifold and perhaps a nice pair of bucket seats. Also, I think I will either lower the front, or raise the rear a touch.

I suppose I'd best add a picture:

Well, I let the blog suffer a bit, since the last update I got bored with the white wheels and bought some bigger blacker ones, and put a set of s2 replica decals on with blue writing, which I'm really quite fond of.

Around this time I added a set of Corbeauauuueueusu Carrera Recliners which are nice but I havent got any more pictures.

The headgasket in the replacement S1 engine is on its way, and the stem seals are pretty much dead, so I took that as motivation to fit the 16v that I'd always fancied, so a long trip to weston super mare got me an engine, and I began to build a pile of parts (and an overdraft) in antiscipation of a week off to fit it all.

I was bored one friday, so took a trip to Shenpar and returned with a nice quickshift, a fibreglass bonnet to replace the original red one (that had an annoying sag in the middle) and a set of group N engine mounts, and some bonnet pins.

Half an hour after getting back I had the bonnet fitted, much easier than I expected.

It does flap about at bit at speed and shat me up the first time I went out, but after some careful testing in a wind tunnel at exactly the 116mph max speed of the car, I was worrying about nothing. Several iterations of washer jet setups have resulted in a completely overcomplicated but very impressive setup with some aly spray bars I made up one evening after an 8pm trip to B and Q, although my screenwash consumption is neary as bad as my fuel consumption.

Future plans include fitting the big lovely pile of bits, and replacing my plush, comfy recliners with something much less comfortable but lighter, and perhaps a disk beam on the back because i'm fed up of handbrake adjusters siezing, I was happy with always having a quite shit handbrake on the VTR rather than it being really good one day and then absolute rubbish the next.

Crikey!

I thought they were but wasn't sure. Do they not screw the handling a bit? I know those wheels are pretty light but surely they are still a good bit heavier than the steelies.

They look ace though

It drives fine for what I do on the roads, for the track I'll get some proper wheels.
They arent all that heavy really, it drives better than it did with the 15s to be honest, and I love the look of them too

Cool mate, the graduate stripes on the bonnet look well too

You gonna get a roll cage though? I have never liked the idea of harnesses and no cage. If the roof comes in, your body wont bend out the way like it can with a normal belt and your neck gets squashed

Cheers dyno, Good point.. I'm always planning a cage, its just waiting for when funds will allow. The harnesses weren't really a planned mod, they just came up for sale through my cousin really cheap and brand new (20 the pair) so I just thought meh, why not.

Not sure about how they are fixed in for now, they dont quite adjust to how I'd like them (Using the existing bolt holes for the seatbelts for the lap bit means it won't quite sit straight) but I'll get them fitted properly when I get the new seats in and sorted.

She's coming off the road tomorrow once I've driven round and collected all the niggly bits for the 16v (Cambelt, oils, filter, driveshaft seals and castle nuts, a mile of heatshrink, new soldering iron tip and butane, new grinderizing disks and maybe a new radiator perhaps)

Todays progress:
Drove round, got my bits and bobs and gave the 1.3 a goodbye thrash, got back and then burned my arm repeatedly on everything as I drained various fluids, fannyed around taking the raceland off and stuff. About 2 hours later I was left with this:

Then about 5 hours after that (farting about with the 16v cambelt nonesense and grinding the engine mount and cutting the cambelt cover took ages)

Just got to plumb and wire it tomorrow, Hoping to get her driving in 2 days, and have the rest of the week to sort out the abortion of a rocker cover and inlet manifold, fit the new bottom arms and sort the ride height out, oh and get the tracking set to half as much toe in as they are supposed to have (due to the solid mounts).

All in all quite a productive day to say I've been on my own because my only friend jon_ox was at work.

Well, its in and running now - all wired up and finished, started first time I'm getting good at this game!

Just waiting on a thermostat housing from pug, mine was cracked when the engine was on a pallet, and started leaking as soon as the engine got to temperature.

The shenpar engine mounts are quite solid, not rattly though.

DONE Bloody hell they don't half go with a 16v in, completely different car to drive. With the s1 box on it pulls so much harder in every gear, even in top at 40mph it has plenty of go.

I'm dead happy

Well sort of thinking aloud here, as I've got to send another modificatiions form off to the insurance, I thought I'd do a list of everything I can remember that I've done to the poor thing.

Engine/Box:
  • 1998 1.6 16v GTi/VTS Engine
  • Mystery induction kit
  • Rebuilt S1 Box
  • Pugsport Exhaust
  • Group.N Hard Rubber upper engine mounts
  • Powerflex Lower mount and exhaust mounts
  • Procomp Carbon Fibre engine cover

Interior:
  • Stripped rear/Carpet/soundproofing
  • Corbeau Forza Sport Seats
  • Sparco 3 Point harnesses
  • Shenpar/TAS Quickshift jobbie
  • Sparco Steering wheel with Snap off boss
  • Spare wheel mounted in rear

Exterior
  • French font pressed number plates
  • S2 decals with blue text
  • Shenpar Fibreglass bonnet and locking pins
  • Aly spray bars on wipers due to removable bonnet
  • Little aerial
  • Couple of LEDS added to the indicator housing wired to the side lights

Chassis
  • Lowered about 40mm
  • Bilstein dampers of some sort
  • Ventura Springs
  • 2004 206 Gti Front Calipers, Disks and pads.
  • New Track rod ends and drop links
  • Powerflex Poly Wishbone front mounts
  • Nylon/aly rear wishbone mount
  • Powerflex ARB bushes
  • OMP Anthracite S2 16v Upper Brace
  • OMP Anthracite Lower brace
  • OMP AA/101/182 Rear half roll cage

I've never listed it all out like that, No wonder I'm skint!

Turns out the main source of the knock was my 6 week old drop links, combined with worn top mounts.

I've replaced the drop links but the nut on the top of the damper doesnt want to budge, so it looks like I'll have to wait until I can get hold of a windy gun to get those buggers off.

The car has recieved YET MORE WHEELS, I currently have 2 sets and can't decide which I like more.

or

I'm also going to have to seriously calm down with spending on the car now, as I'm off back to university to complete my degree in a couple of weeks.

I've now decided the "steels" are staying. See the post in for sale section if you want some MOs!

Fitted a new set of top mounts and some Spax Springs on the front, was hoping it would settle a bit lower but it's exactly the same, hey ho. Anyone want to buy my dignity in exchange for a set of coilovers?

On the up hand, the knock is pretty much sorted. The list of things to fix is ever decreasing! Jon_ox has nicely got me a new door to fit to same me repairing the hole where I got broken into about 10 months ago. Top man!

Cheers for the comments I do have a spare rear seat but I'm sort of hanging on to them, Rallyes with interiors are getting rare and I do want the option to return mine to more standard one day

Thanks Tom
