Aussie GP Thread

Anyone else watch first practice this morning?
The cars still look a little bit funny to me, was good to see some opposite lock though.

I can't help but think that Mclaren are sand-bagging, and that they will find an amazing turn of pace come sunday.

Hope that Brawn GP do well, and that the rear diffuser argument blows away.

I'm just catching up on the pistonheads thread. I'll be up for qually and the race though! Consensus over there is that McMerc aren't sandbagging, i'm inclined to agree. I can't see how they would benefit, especially with limited testing time now.

I'll be up for qually and the race, no way was I getting up early this morning though.

I think McLaren may be using the practice sessions to test a variety of things, rather than trying to set a quick lap. With the lack of in-season testing time, these extra hours on Fridays could be used this way. The only times session that matters is qualifying.

I can't wait for the race though, I will be online whilst watching if there's any banter to be had

What benefits are there ?
I'll have the timing on the PC whilst I'm watching as per usual.

The benefit of Sky+'ing it is I don't have to get up early and as I can see the race on Sunday I can watch it in full when I get home, not some shonky edited re-run.

I didn't know you could get the timings live on the web! How backwards am I!

Is the full thing not repeated on the red button and on iplayer, like this mornings practice sessions ?

The F1 official site has had the live timings for years now, it was the only way of seeing what was happening during the bloody ITV ad-breaks. I understand The Telegraph has something new and funky for this year though, might be worth a look.

Cool, yeah Sky+ isn't so essential now its back on the BBC.

I used to let it record then watch it about 20 minutes after it started then I could fast forward the adverts and be back on live TV for the last 15 minutes :-)

Be interesting to see how the BBC deals with the coverage.

I'm still gutted about Eurosport losing the Moto GP.

Well worth getting up for! Was good to hear Jenson say the car felt weird running on fumes, seems like their pace is real! On the downside, double diffusers are so going to be banned in the court of appeal, even more so if they finish 1-2 like I hope.

I don't think they will ban them.
The fact that they have done so well so quick will bring in the tv viewers. It makes a good story.
Also, RB are doing well without the diffuser.
Goes to show that when the cars are left to the genius of designers that money does not buy success.
Adrian Newey and Ross Brawn are legends.

Well, a whole bunch of shenanigans.

Toyota have both cars DQ'd from qually due to flexible rear wings, and it looks like BMW are protesting against Red Bull and Ferrari for something aerodynamic, possibly their undertrays.

Also, the BrawnGP cars seem to be running heavy in Q3 so no sandbagging there.

Code:
Post-qualifying car weights:

1 - Jenson Button / Brawn = 664.5kg
2 - Rubens Barrichello / Brawn = 666.5kg
3 - Sebastian Vettel / Red Bull = 657kg
4 - Robert Kubica / BMW = 650kg
5 - Nico Rosberg / Williams = 657kg
6 - Felipe Massa / Ferrari = 654kg
7 - Kimi Räikkönen / Ferrari = 655.5kg
8 - Mark Webber / Red Bull = 662kg
9 - Nick Heidfeld / BMW = 691.5kg
10 - Fernando Alonso / Renault = 680.7kg
11 - Kazuki Nakajima / Williams = 680.5kg *
12 - Heikki Kovalainen / McLaren = 690.6kg
13 - Sebastien Buemi / Toro Rosso = 675.5kg
14 - Nelson Piquet / Renault = 694.1kg
15 - Giancarlo Fisichella / Force India =689kg
16 - Adrian Sutil / Force India = 684.5kg
17 - Sebastien Bourdais / Toro Rosso = 662.5kg
18 - Lewis Hamilton / McLaren = 655kg
19 - Jarno Trulli / Toyota = 660kg
20 - Timo Glock / Toyota = 670kg

* To be confirmed by FIA

Yes.

Reports were that it was actual gears that failed, which they could replace without penalty.
They chose to replace the whole box and take the 5 place drop.

Surprised no one's commented since. I'm going to be the first to say, the new cars/rules are awesome! Great drive by Button, lucky drive by Barrichello, loved his comments about hitting everything before the podium lol. Bad luck Vettel
