Rallye James - Onyx Black S2 Rallye

You may have seen by now, I picked up yet another Rallye yesterday. Flew up to Newcastle and drove it back down. The car in question is infamous on here, so you probably know it already. It's usually referred to as RACK, due to it's R489ACK number plate and is the only 8v out of the three black S2 Rallyes in the UK. Being a German import, it's also LHD

It's currently standard other than being lowered 20mm on Billies and Eibachs, which I think I'll keep as is. I already have a few marmite plans for it, but on the same principle as the 306, nothing that won't be easily removed. Plan so far are...

306 Rallye front seats, with standard 106 rear seats
Red S1 Rallye carpet and seat belts
USB/Bluetooth headunit with 306 steering column control
OMP 300mm Trecento leather steering wheel
Standard steelies on Kumho KU31s
Gloss black Rallye steelies on whatever come off the current standard steelies
Gloss black 15" Compomotive TH Rallye/CXR
266m 306 S16 brake setup
Raceland 4-2-1
Pugsport 2" exhaust
Standard 8v engine
Colour coded front and rear bump strips (how it should have been!)
Custom crystal headlights
Custom crystal rear lights

It is a really tidy car, and it's clear to see it's had a fair bit of tidying up done lately. There's still a few things I want to sort out now that I've had a good look around it.

Dent in the boot - hoping it will push out from inside when I fit the wiper blank tomorrow.
Dents in the drvers door - Will get a dent remover on the case if I see one at a show, there's about 5 small dents, they just show up in certain light.
Bonnet - rippled along the front edge, will probably get a replacement
Decals - Bonnet and bootlid ones are knackered, side strips are missing a couple of little bits. Will replace with a replica set, hopefully with yellow writing.
Stereo - it has a Sony headunit, but the radio doesn't work, and nor does the source button, meaning that to turn it on, you have to eject the CD. If anyone has a cheap stereo knocking about I'd be interested.
Tyres - It currently has five different brands including the spare, will stick my Superleggeras on for now I think, then see about a full set of Kumhos in time.

That's about it really, aside from that it's a very tidy car! The boot inside had a few scratches, but bodywork wise, it's the tidiest I've ever seen, all the arch panels are perfectly straight and there's very very little rust underneath. The exhaust system is all standard, but it rasps pretty nicely and I even got a few pops out of it Gearbox feels nice and tight and the handling on the Billies and Eibachs is perfect

Pics...

More to come tomorrow!

Pic time again

Mint interior

Represent!

Shiny shiny!

New bonnet needed TBH, and a new decal at the same time

Glossy steels

More new decals needed

Oh hai!

Tidy boot, could do with a lick of paint, but there's not a spot of rust or splitting

Pretty clean underneath too, very little rust under there!

Its the bit after which is funnier when you try to act as if nothing has happened and walk aroud the car like you knew what you were doing, best time I had in my LHD was pulling up to a set of lights and I had my dog in the passenger seat....got some double looks that day. He's a german shepard so looked the part....it reminded me of the old cannonball film with the chimp driving the limo

Looks like it's had some fair use, but like I say, it's only cosmetic damage, I'll get it sprayed up and get one of the vinyl boot liners in there, think I'm going to stick the spare under the car too if I can get a wheel cage.

Haha, yeah, I've done it three times now, just walk round the wrong side, then realise, then walk back round looking to see if anyone saw Had a few confused looks from people thinking there was nobody driving the car!

Very tidy. I always remember seeing a Black S2 being broken into by a couple of joyriders when watching the French Film Taxi with Samy Naceri in it and thinking that they were good looking cars.

In black Rallye bump strips aren't painting.

I have also black Rallye s2. My Rallye is without stickers, but I will buy custom stickers in next month.

Good choice, James

Yeah, not sure why the black ones don't have the bump strips painted The blue and white ones do.

I'm going to get a spare set and have them painted up

Yeah, I am going to get the spare wheel cage on and stick the spare under the car. Think yours will probably be easier for me to pick up Sam. Don't suppose you're coming to the 106OC meet in Bristol next weekend are you, could pick it up there

Sam, yeah it's the 11th. Will sort out some other time, no worries.

Dom, I believe I'm the 10th owner, I've kept track of it over the last couple of years and found a bit of it's history. It's been owned by the following members/forum users...

Badgersport - Owned the car after it was imported by LAD Motorsport in 2001. Car was used by his wife.
Bonnie - Bought the car in 2005.
Lee - Not sure if he was on the forum. Bought the car in 2006. He added semi slicks and the Bilstein/Eibach suspension. He also cut the rear bumper for the Magnex exhaust that was fitted for the car to pass the MOT.
Artdealer - A car trader who bought the car in October 2006.
Darrenwm - Bought the car in March 2007, cleaned it up, gave it a full machine polish and put standard exhaust back on (after briefly having a Pugsport) and normal road tyres.
Dougle - Bought the car in May 2008, managed to get a big scrape in the side of it and got it a bit rough really. Had a Supersprint on it at some point but sold with standard system
Rage - Bought the car in October 2008, planned to go full out Euro on it, ditched the idea soon after.
Raygv - Bought the car in December 2008, planned to restore it and keep it off the road as a mint example.
Jamie W - Bought the car in June 2009, got it looking pretty tidy again, finally replaced cut out bumper and fixed scrape on passenger side.
Rallye James - Bought the car in September 2009.

Time for a little marmite

Lexus lights = free, standard lights = free, with 5 postage. So for the total cost of 5, I set about knocking these up yesterday.

First, completely obliterated the lexus lights with a heat gun

Then smashed the red covers of the standard light to reveal the second layer underneath.

The bottom row of lights will obviously need a red tint as they're the brake/tail lights, but I'm not sure what to do with the tops, leave as they are, tint red as per the bottom, or take the red stripey bit out all together (as it's easily removeable now). Then got to work out how to fix the units together.

No, sorry Kris, I'm keeping the steelies.

The OZs are still for sale really if anyone ever wants them off me and I want to keep the steelies and maybe get some track tyres on them.

Picked up and fitted a Raceland 4-2-1 last night, all went on well (as it had been fitted to a car before), just forgot how hard the bottom nuts were to put on!

All sorted though and it's made a noticeable difference to the way it picks up and the sound it makes, even with the standard exhaust and cat. Very pleased with it

Was also pleasantly surprised when I was under the car as I noticed some nice purple ARB bushes

That was Lee that did all of the bushes and uprated suspension e.t.c.

Thought it would probably have all been done at the same time as the Bilsteins and Eibachs. Probably goes part way to explaining why it goes so well. Will have a further explore round the rear beam next week, see if it's got any uprated bushes there. I know the wishbones haven't yet.

Lee spent quite a bit of money on her in the way of suspension. He put new steelies and slicks on too

Only a little update, and yet again no photos

Spent the day on the car yesterday, fingers crossed the stereo is now sorted, the radio seems to work with my temporary bodge aerial, the wiring is done and the battery doesn't seem to be draining Also got a cage to hold it in as I was fed up of it landing on my lap

Then found a set of red seat belts in the shed. They could do with a clean but free mods are the best

And whilst the rain held off for half hour, I took the decals off the boot, just leaving the stripes on the far right. Looks better than the peeling pink decals until I can afford some new ones

Finally, some pics

Free Raceland manifold

All fitted with the spaghetti pipe and no problems

Latest headunit (#3), possibly still draining the battery, but the radio almost works now

Red belts I found hanging around the garage, so fitted them, fronts need a clean though

Decals removed

And just one after a wash and wax today

New headlights. I'm unsure whether to keep as they are or do the bit next to the indicator in graphite grey, which would match the planned wheels

Yet another minor update, went up to Gloucester for a 106OC meet last weekend and whilst I was there I raided my mate's 16v flat arch for parts So now I'm sitting in a mint RHD Rallye passenger seat (in my driver's side of course), I have a split fold Rallye bench, I have headrests in the back of a Rallye and I have a boot floor mat to fit once I've got a cage for my spare wheel

Will get some pics of the new interior over the week, but until then, here are some I took of the car after the meet.

As promised, pics of new seats

After driving round a rather grey looking Rallye for the last few weeks, I decided to sort my self out and give it a quick wash yesterday. Then with being bored this afternoon I thought it would be perfect to get out and try some photographs before getting it dirty again. Forgot to take the tripod and soon ran out of light so they weren't as good as I'd hoped, but still, here are the best of the bunch

Good old Rack made 116bhp on Powerstations rollers yesterday. Not bad from a bog standard tappy old 8v with just a Raceland mani. It's a little on the high side IMO but it gives me a benchmark for any further work I do to the car over the next year.

Also picked a few more bits up. Spare wheel cage from Chris was fitted this morning so I've now got the boot space freed up and the boot floor mat fitted. Will have an OMP strap to sell once I can remove it.

Went on to Swindon and picked up a black bonnet, which I fitted last night, panel gaps aren't brilliant but I'm much happier with the bonnet now that there's no rippled dents and no tatty decal. Just need to get on with some new bonnet and boot decals once I've decided whether to go for OR or replicas.

Also got a bit more done on the custom headlights and went a bit mad on the Ford Graphite Grey So the indicator holders got done, and then I did the bonnet badge and bonnet struts (which meant I could fit them the 'proper' way round) too. So pleased with the colour, the metal flake in it looks lovely

So here's some pics, if you'll excuse the dirt

This may be controversial but I think it looked better on the steelies If you lowered it and fitted some Yoko cut slicks, the steelies would look great and the whole car would look ace. Needs a new rear decal too man!

It's back on the steels now, and I do agree with you. I thought I preferred the OZs til I put the steels on last weekend, just love it now Also...

Quick update, even a photo for you all Ordered some new genuine decals to replace the old pink ones on the boot that I had removed and the one on the bonnet (as I'd swapped the bonnet recently). Got a great deal on genuine ones from 106parts.com, took a couple of weeks to arrive but finally turned up at work on the first day of my holiday, lol!

Anyway, got home early today before the meet and did the bootlid ones and it looks like a Rallye again now (not just a GTi on steels ). Bonnet one should be coming in the next couple of days after a bit of a mix up.

Also have my carpet that I picked up in Holland, need to get my mum's uber-hoover-washer on it in a few places, then it'll be good to go in, possibly this weekend.

Some better photos of the decals now

Got myself a Ph3 306 column stalk from a car my friend was breaking so had a go at fitting it today.

Just had to drill a hole in the steering column cowling and then my mum jigsawed the hole a bit bigger (she's a pro with the jigsaw, lol). Then drilled two smaller holes in the underside and riveted the stalk in place.

Quite pleased with the rivets, they look tidy enough, though I may paint them black sometime.

A little less pleased with the hole for the stalk, I'm going to get a bigger grommit to tidy that up.

Took all this out to make it easier to get everything in the right place.

All fitted and working

Quite pleased with how easy it all went together and worked!

Just given the new carpet a wash and clean, it's come up well from a really dull red to the bright colour it should be Not bad considering it was free!

Just look at the colour of the dirt the cleaner bought out!
