Gloskris - 1995 S1 Rallye Build

I never thought id get a rallye but one come up for sale for a good price so i jumped at the oppurtunity, seeing as my Nana is now a long term project which will be done 100% properly no hammer bodging.

Spec so far :

OMP Lower Strut Brace
Oil Catch Tank
Poly bushed wishbones and Front ARB
Mintex Front Discs
OMP 971c Pads
Omp half cage
Sparco sprint Junior buckets
Sabelt 3 point harness
Green Filter
Raceland 4-2-1

Not a bad buy mind really chuffed

Lower Engine mount on the rallye had pretty much perished from 15 years of road use so this got replaced with a powerflex one.

Now that was replaced while i was down there i decided to sort a horrible knocking sound out which i came across when i took it for a little drive. Strut brace had been bent upwards and fouling with the centre/manifold join.
Also i'd like to announce i still am raceland manifolds number one hater. That piece of poo was replaced with a supersprint

New bumper yeaaaaah

Well like everyone else i'm struggling to work on the rallye due to the snow. I put the car in for an mot and it failed on just rear brakes/hand brakes. Any way a job that is ment to be pretty easy has turned into a ball ache.
To a point where i might just buy a full rebuilt disc beam and get shot of the drums.

I also investigated what appeared to be the dreaded "r" word.. yes of corse you've guested it... Rust and to my avail i found out it was kinda bad. On the down point i bought some new number plates

inside the boot -

inside the wheel arch -

New metal pressed plates -

Nice looking rallye. My rust was just as bad, if not worse than that, after sanding it all back and cutting out the cancer that is rust i ended up with a hole big enough to get my hand through! Ended up welding 3 plates into the boot and two under the car in the wheel arch and boot floor. The rust was so bad one of the exhaust mounts dropped off the car and there was no where to weld it back onto because every time we sanded a bit back to weld it on, it was just rust! Ended up making a new mount out of a metal rod that was kicking about, bent it and cut to size and just welded it to the only good bit of car we could find! Mine also failed MOT on hand break, had it tested at a different station to try and solve what it failed on and it came back fine!
I would suggest going for the Disk rear beam as well, did it on my rallye and it took the brakes from " MY GOD THESE ARE AWFUL!" to "At least i can feel the car stopping now!" s1 rallye brakes are terrible at the best of times!

Bit of an update today some progress but not alot.

I've had the beam off stripped the drums to bare and replaced what was needed
- Slave servo x2
- Drum shoes x2
- rear bearings x2
- polyrace beam bushes
- Handbrake cables

Seeing as there is no play i've not bothered replacing trailing arm bearing and stub pins.

Well at the current moment because of 15 years to corrosion, ive stripped the rear brake lines out from the master cylinder. I'm going to replace just the rears for now with braided lines and do the front at another time.

I also got a chance to switch thr subframe over to a brand new omp one. This one sits more higher than the older one i had. soo happy with that. Photos of what ive been up too will be posted up soon just to make this thread a lil more interesting.

Also bought a few more goodies for the rallye.
- Aerocatch bonnet pins (locking)
- Odyssey 25 race battery
- Goodridge Braided lines

And also got some things to fit from the gti
- B&M quickshift
- Baker BM rose jointed gear linkages
- Rear Grp N bilsteins dampers
- GE quickshift
- Front half of cage with door bars

Things i need to get done
- welding
- bigger brakes front (266mm)
- disc beam
- some panels need spraying

2 quick shifts?

S1's use different calipers to S2's, fitting S2/Gti calipers and decent pads/braided line would do the job, thats what my saxo is getting.

Yeah man i used them in the gti and it was spot on for me. Some said it felt too stiff but i think it feels ace.
I'll keep that in mind dave. They are the standard rallye calipers

Get used to the brakes that in there before you change them for bigger fella, they work pretty well!! They do lock very easily though, takes some time to get used to!

I couldnt stand the standard s1 brakes, i had NO confidence in them at all, i changed for a GTI rear beam and upgraded the disks and pads on the front, and even that felt terrible. Every one who drove my car said how much fun it was but how sloppy the brakes felt under heavy braking. Each to their own though!

S1's have the same brakes as a 1.6 205 gti, a friend of mine runs EBC yellows in them with reconditioned calipers and they stop VERY well, obviously 15 year old sloppy bendix calipers will not perform quite as well as that!

The car is a tarmac stage rally car so gets used very hard.

They are nice and light, which is important.

Right got to work on the rear beam today. Took a little longer than expected due to the thread being flat in some spots. So as you can already guess i had to dress the thread with a swiss needle file to get it back to a working condition. Unfortunetly I'm at the Autosport show tomorrow so there be no progress tomorrow which is annoying.

Nice I fancy a set of those Billie GRP N's.

Are you polybush'ing the rear beam? The disc beam bushes seem to play alot nicer than the older rubber mounts. Sure they are a nylon, few drills through and 1 wallop and they usually come out complete.

Cheers Jack, Yeah Ash that's my old nana. It's in need of some major work. I'll soon get that back to standard and nice looking after the rallye is finished.

Probably look to sell the Gti once complete.
